Summary
John is a sixth year Gryffindor in love with his best friend, Ravenclaw Sherlock. Even the fact that he knows it's unrequited hasn't helped. He makes an unexpected new acquaintance one day in the form of an otter, which is just as well, since Sherlock starts acting odder than usual and even disappearing at times, without explanation when he shows up again.
John worries about that and wonders about the fact that the otter turns up roughly as Sherlock vanishes, even as he's enjoying the companionship of the little creature. The answer isn't anything he expects, certainly, but it might prove what he needs, regardless. -

For the prompt:
John almost dies because Sherlock runs off with John after a killer without first informing Lestrade where they where going and why. A guilt ridden Sherlock who is not use to caring and is a having a hard time dealing with feeling guilt for the first time in his life, ask John to take charge. Sherlock agrees not to do anything without Johns approval and to do whatever John tells him to.
Not knowing how long this will last, John takes the opportunity to make sure Sherlock takes care of himself and to teach him some basic social skills/manners. Sherlock rebels but he did promise and a promise is a promise.
