1983 November 6th, the disappearance of Will Byers.
They've searched the entire upside down, or well, all they could. Eleven wasn't able to track down Will or confirm he was even alive at this point and Joyce couldn't take it anymore. They left empty handed and hearts heavier than ever. She refused to believe her boy wasn't alive, that he was gone. “Joyce,” Hopper muttered her name as he leaned back against the wall of his cabin, Jonathan and a little girl, with no more than a number for a name, asleep inside, maybe, probably, still guilty about not having found Will.
Her only response, a hum acknowledgement as she wrapped her arms around her legs, knees tucked tight against her chest and a cigarette held between two fingers. “Don't tell me he's gone. I won't believe it until I see with my own two eyes.” She cut him off, guessing what he was going to say by the look on his face.
“He's out there somewhere and I,” she blinked rapidly, taking a deep breath and putting out the cigarette. “I won't stop waiting for him to come home, even if it takes years.”

Alastor is fine, really. Sometimes a mysterious figure comes and hurts him, but it's for his own good. He failed, and now he's reaping the consequences. It could be worse. He could be dead.
Charlie just wants to see her hotelier again. He was like a parental figure to her, and she's trying to move on, really, but why did he have to die and not her? She can't understand.
Or:
Lucifer looks for Alastor post-battle after Charlie let it slip that she made a deal with Alastor. He strips him of his powers and leaves Alastor there to die, and everyone assumes he's dead. Alastor is being held hostage by his soul owner for his failure, and believes that it's his fault he's being help captive. Charlie deals with survival guilt and grieving yet another person she considers family.
