September 1898: Gellert Grindelwald, einst Schüler auf Durmstrang, wechselt für seine letzten beiden Schuljahre an die Schule für Hexerei und Zauberei - Hogwarts. Dort ist er auf der Suche nach Antworten und nach Menschen, die bereit sind, ihm im Sinne seiner Ideen zu dienen und zu folgen.
Sein Ehrgeiz erreicht neue Ausmaße, als Schulleiter Professor Phineas Nigellus Black das Trimagische Turnier ankündigt, denn Gellert sieht darin die Möglichkeit, die Bekanntheit und Anerkennung zu erlangen, die er braucht, um seinem Ziel einer gerechteren Welt näherzukommen.
Doch dazu muss er erst einmal an Albus Dumbledore vorbei - dem beliebten Schulsprecher aus dem Siebten Jahr, den alle Welt zu bewundern scheint. Dessen Charme sieht Gellert jedoch bald als Chance, um Gefolge um sich zu scharen. The foul pollen hung like a heavy cloud in the sun-drenched air, thick with the smell of unripe apples and languid silence. Thoughts of his sister's muffled and weary voice could not help but evoke gloomy and lofty thoughts in Albus:
"My duty lies here, in Godric's Hollow. Ariana is defenceless, and her soul is crippled, and if I do not become her shield, what will remain of me as a human being? Everything else can wait.
Gellert listened sleepily, unable to move because of the laziness that consumed him, but when he spoke, his words cut through the calm like Godric Gryffindor's sharp sword:
"You worship a virtue that you have created from your own chains, in which you have shackled yourself. You call this duty? I see only fear, the fear of a slave. Your power is capable of defeating death, but you squander it by wiping the saliva from the chin of a mad girl. Renounce your pity: only on its ashes can the throne of your true self be erected. You have almost learned not to consider the ugly beautiful, so learn not to consider humiliation strength. Do you want to save Ariana? You can do it by leading the Common Good as a master, but you will only prolong her suffering if you continue to crawl on your knees.
