“I figured you would want company for Dumbledore's speech. Although I have no doubt everyone at your table will be listening with attention.'' The latter is said with an icy smile, directed to all Slytherins who would be tempted to bugger him - classic Burgie. Having met no answer, he sits next to Snafu, just in time for the headmaster’s speech to begin.
Truth be told, Snafu has never been such a keen listener anyway - Sledge always gave him the heads up on which new dangerous part of the castle was to avoid that year - but even he has taken notice of the ways these speeches have evolved around the years, hinting more and more on the dangers looming outside school and the urge to protect each other. Snafu thinks of the letters written by Sledge over the summer and clenches his fists under the table without thinking.
Sledge and Snafus' fifth year at Hogwarts, as the First Wizarding War creeps on the edge of the castle.

He didn’t know how to explain it to him, nor did he have the opportunity. Snafu would do great for months on end and then the drinking would start again; everything going downhill from there.

“Sir, there's been some misunderstanding. I already know how to use a rifle. I can fight. I want to fight.” Eugene has always pictured himself as a soldier. He's sure it's what he's meant to do.
“Son, take a good look around. We got dozens of young men signing on who can shoot a rifle but almost none of 'em can be a medic. You’re needed more as a medic than a fighter.” The man hands him his orders, and Eugene looks down at them in a forlorn sort of shock. “Welcome to the Army.”

He steps inside the bar and hears his laugh, loud and roaring as he bends over the billiard table. Eugene’s mind blanks. His anger grows so big that it almost consumes him, washes hot and blindingly over him, so that for a second he can’t see a thing, other than a piercing white light.

Eugene has to face the anger that the war inflicted in him and which follows him home. He has to learn how to live with it, overcoming it with the years. Thankfully he has Merriell by his side who helps him to stay calm whenever the state of the world makes him feel utterly helpless and angry at times. -

The sun is starting to set outside, bathing the room in a pinkish-orange glow. A single ray of light catches the dust floating in the air and ignites Eugene’s hair in a saint’s halo. Merriell presses a kiss into Eugene’s skin and holds him close. He’s been through that maze once before; he has a light to guide Eugene with now. The fact that he’s talking about it is a great sign for the future. “I’ll help you,” he promises him. “You’re lovelier than you think you are.”

after he wakes alone on the train, eugene sledge begins his long journey home, finding it more and more difficult to maintain his composure as the days drag into weeks and he’s expected to return to normal life. that life was never normal to him, he never wanted it. the walls he builds around his heart and his mind, prevent those close to him from looking to deep or asking too many questions. and while his family and friends struggle to navigate the choppy waters of his newfound temperament, a small piece of paper gathers dust in the pocket of the uniform eugene swore he’d never put back on. it isn’t until its discovery that eugene realizes that he’s never really been alone and that the people that he’s thought had been too nosy or adamant he do something with his life post-war, were acting out of love. and it’s that love that gives eugene the courage to something he never thought possible.
