When Ezio arrived in Venice to hunt down and eliminate the rest of the conspirators responsible for the deaths of his father and brothers, love was the last thing on his mind, especially after he broke things off with Cristina for good 3 years ago. As such, he was not prepared to fall for the force of nature that was Sofia Sartor.
When Sofia and her family left their home in Constantinople for Venice due to the war, she decided to throw herself into books as a way to escape the feeling of homesickness she was sure would consume her otherwise. She was not prepared for love, and she DEFINITELY was not prepared to fall for the charismatic storm that was Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

200 years later he finds himself on foreign land with many questions and little answers, trying hard to not be recognized as he seeks answers from the local Brotherhood, helping them along the way in search of the reason he still lives.
Finding the answer to his most asked question, in a way he would never have expected, he wishes nothing more than to see his family and brothers just one last time and be released from his burdens.

----Desmond just watched at first.
It had taken days to realise where he was, or rather, when he was. Desmond was half convinced he was in a coma or a long-lasting Bleeding episode at first. But it was not the Bleeding Effect, nor did Desmond seem to be in another coma.
He was not in the Animus, but in real world Renaissance Florence.
By the time Desmond finally seemed to snap out of his daze, he stumbled upon the Piazza della Signoria where a large crowd was gathered.
He recognised this scene, though the last time he saw it, he had arrived on the opposite side of the piazza. The last time he had been watching through the eyes of Ezio.
Watching the crowd move, Desmond found himself stopping a nearby woman, “Scusi, signora, but would you happen to know today's date?”
“December 29th.”
Desmond’s eyes were wide in disbelief. “And the year?”
“1476.”
December 29th, 1476.
The day the Auditore family was executed.

There was something about the Renaissance that was both incredibly overwhelming as well as painfully familiar.
In many ways, it felt like home. In other ways, it was nothing like Desmond had expected it to be.The Animus was not entirely accurate in its depiction of the time. It left some things out and changed others but it was definitely close enough for Desmond to get by. Rome was very different from how it was in Desmond’s time but the layout was mostly the same as were the larger buildings like the Colosseum and the Vatican.
It made Desmond believe everything had all been a bad dream. That he was still underneath Villa Auditore, hiding from the Templars while spending countless hours inside the Animus. Only when he got out of the Temple and got to the surface did he realise that this was not the case. This was not just Heavy Bleeding, like Desmond experienced the past few weeks, this was real. Terrified at the implications, Desmond did what he had been taught to do best.
He hid.
