Jiāng Fēngmián’s hand had gone cold on its own, no warm breath against her skin like the few times in their long life together when he’d been kind enough to hold her hand. She wanted to scream, scream at the loss of her husband, but she couldn’t bring herself the energy to even grieve properly despite feeling her heart break into a million piece throughout the day, from the very moment she’d shoved her son into the boat, to seeing Jīnzhū and Yínzhū fall, to the sight of the sword running through her husband’s chest, blood on his lips.
None of them had had the presence of mind to check them for a pulse.

The seconds fly by quickly, and Yu Ziyuan's figure tenses as she doesn't get the immediate response she expected. Her lips pursed and her fists clenched, the wind of conflict rocked the boat more violently, and the Violet Spider's meager patience was exhausted by his silence.
Yu Ziyuan stretched out her arm like a general. "Wei Wuxian!" She exclaimed like a flash of lightning. "Have I been clear?"
He wants to claim her, and yet his body is frozen at the mere thought of Zidian bursting against his aching back once more. The remnants of electricity still numbs his limbs, and he also doesn't have the mental fortitude to fight something that is most likely his fault.
So, before he even gives Yu Ziyuan time to extend Zidian around the two young men, Wei Wuxian acts.

The next time Wei Wuxian became aware of his surroundings and was able to form semi-coherent thoughts, Wen Zhuliu had just finished tying weights to his feet. Both his arm and his back were still bleeding and he felt as if he had been flayed.
“Should I make it quick?” Wen Zhuliu asked him, offering a small mercy.
But Wei Wuxian shook his head. “Give me your worst,” he snarled, his teeth coated in blood from where he had bitten his tongue at some point. “I will come back to end you all,” he promised darkly.
“Very well,” Wen Zhuliu merely said and drowned him.
Or: Yu Ziyuan cuts off Wei Wuxian's hand to appease the Wens. He gets drowned in the lake behind Lotus Pier and resentful energy transforms him into a river spirit. After avenging his own death, he finds his way to Yiling.

What if Madam Yu doesn't die at Lotus Pier, and is rescued and brought to Wen Qing as well?
Perhaps it’s just the way Wen Qing’s dark, intelligent eyes stay fixed on Ziyuan even while Ziyuan shouts; perhaps it’s the way Wen Qing holds herself, head held high and shoulders squared against the world, despite having soft hands that have never borne sword calluses; perhaps it’s simply the way she has surprised Ziyuan. Or perhaps Ziyuan has spent too long in idle, enforced meditation in this quiet hut, and it’s stirring up some sort of foolish nostalgia for her past.
Whatever it is, Ziyuan doesn’t like it.

Held in captivity by Wen Chao after the fall of Lotus Pier, Yu Ziyuan and Wei Wuxian are thrown in the same cell. Wei Wuxian is doing his best to survive the horrors inflicted on him by the Wens, and Yu Ziyuan is left to pick up the pieces - or, if she's not careful, maybe to shatter them further.

Although the metallic smell of the blood still lingered in the air even here in the Jiang family quarters where no killing had taken place, the sight and scent of the large lotus lakes made up for it.
The rest of Lotus Cove was bustling with soldiers preparing for the celebratory feast to honour Wen Chao’s bravery in taking down Yunmeng Jiang so quickly, and so Wang Lingjiao had excused herself to go and freshen up in the former Madam Yu’s quarters when she'd first heard the singing.
She walked out onto the private pier and licked her lips, tasting lotus on her tongue as her eyelids fluttered closed slowly.
When she opened them, there was a Lotus Goddess in front of her, singing to her about vengeance and loneliness.
Or: Wang Lingjiao gets hypnotised by a siren/mermaid river creature Jiang Yanli into killing all the invading Wen after the massacre at Lotus Pier, and Yanli decides to keep her around as her plaything while she goes on to become Sect leader Jiang and rid the cultivation world of it's most problematic men while she's at it.
