    Jiang Wanyin had claimed Wei Wuxian left when they were sleeping, that they had planned on going back to Lotus Pier, to fight against the Wen stronghold that was there, to reclaim the bodies of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan - and Wei Wuxian had fled, run, disappeared, vanished.

    He claimed that he woke up, and Wei Wuxian was gone, not a single trace of him in the space they had found to sleep in.

    Immediately, others were giving Jiang Wanyin their condolences for having such a disobedient disciple, for Wei Wuxian fleeing in the night after everything he had caused, leaving the aftermath to be faced alone by Jiang Wanyin.

    Lan Wangji had never believed such a story.

    Sizhui tripped in the darkness again. The wind muscled its way into the beginnings of a terrible storm, and not even stray threads of moonlight illuminated various thresholds and unseen stairs under Sizhui’s feet.

    They trekked across a wide cobbled courtyard. Sizhui couldn’t tell which one anymore. He couldn’t tell where they were going.

     

    I’m dreaming.

     

    His palms burned. His heels too. The humid air stung like acid, and the sweat beading in his hands stabbed like molten knives. Looking down, Sizhui could just barely make out the branching red burns rooted in his wrists and spreading to his fingers. He was sure his feet looked the same. That lightning strike had to exit his body somewhere after all.

     

    I’ve got to be dreaming.

     

    But he couldn’t be dreaming. He wouldn’t dream up that look on Jingyi’s face. His eyes stuck wide, seeing everything but comprehending none of it as they trundled along behind their captors like toys on strings.
