Mario sighs, shaking his head in mild exasperation “He’s a kid, yeah, but with an army, Lu. He’s dangerous.” Mario argued, already knowing his brother’s soft nature, especially when it came to children.
“He just wants his Papa back.” Luigi countered, shaking his head “Bowser seemed very…scared.” He said with a shrug.
“So, what? Are we supposed to let him keep terrorizing innocent people? If we let Bowser go, he’s just going to endanger all of us again. The villagers, the principessa, we can’t just—”
“I know, I know but—” He sighed through his nose, his frustration with himself only rising with knowing that his brother was right.
“I just— I never expected someone like him to care about anyone else, it changes the perspective a little, you know?”
(The one in which Luigi's softhearted nature gets him in trouble, but leads him to an unexpected treasure found within the walls of the Koopa Kingdom's Castle and within Bowser's heart.)

Summary
A long time ago, a deranged dragon, as massive as his flying castle, and his hoards of minions unleashed unfathomable fury on the land. Two lone heroes, strong as ten regular men and shining bright as rainbows, defeated him and captured him in a glass prison, ensuring the safety of everyone around them.
. . . okay, maybe that story wasn't so long ago. And maybe some elements were embellished. It wasn't that fantastic.
Bowser's defeat in New York was spectacular and did show the people of Brooklyn the plumber brothers had grit, sure, but the damage it left was sprawling. The streets were cracked, homes were destroyed, and infrastructure was completely demolished. The Mushroom Kingdom, while spared a majority of the damage, decided to lend hands and toad-power to other kingdoms to help rebuild.
This left the Mario Brothers, the heroes of Brooklyn and Queens, traveling between worlds to help repair the damage and build relations between kingdoms again.
Oh, and keeping an eye on the Mushroom Kingdom's newest prisoner.It's not until one day that Luigi, by complete accident, finds something in common with the Koopa in a can: an interest in music.

By a quick change of plans, Luigi gets kidnapped instead of Peach. It didn't take much time for our red hero to save him from the Mighty King Bowser. And by the next day, the twins were already back in the Mushroom kingdom, acting like nothing ever happened. Luigi never talked about his encounter with the Koopa, and Mario was okay with that.
But, only to find months later, that his little, innocent brother, didn't come exactly empty-handed from the Darklands.
What Bowser is going to do, when the news about having a second heir to the throne, get into his claws?
