Summary
When the battle— a terrible, one-sided affair, only a hazy smear of blood and ash in Alear's memory— finally came to an end, he remembers the sight of those same mothers, clutching their children even after the end. He wonders, often, why they would lie to them, when they saw the Fell Dragon's army approach— what the point is in reassuring a child that they will be okay, even when all that awaits them is death.
In a shameful, defective memory he keeps hidden carefully away for fear it will be the end of him, Alear crawled into the arms of one such corpse and imagined those words directed at him, instead. It's okay. You're alright. Her arms were cold and stiff, slick with blood, haphazardly arranged around his trembling form. Alear wondered if his mother ever held him like this, when he was too small to remember it. It was the closest he has ever come— will ever come— to warmth.

"Sorry— I'm sorry," he manages to spit out. The fear he should normally be able to suppress with ease overflows from that space outside himself where he normally tucks it away. It will only doom him further, but once he's begun to speak he finds he can't seem to stop himself from continuing in a voice that sounds like every defective sibling he's ever watched make blubbering excuses to Father for their failures.
