Thanks to a timely intervention from an old friend, Mello survives the Kira case. After settling his debts, he finds himself broke and alone, with no choice but to approach his rival for his half of the remainder of L’s inheritance. Begrudgingly, he moves into the basement suite of the house that Near shares with his loyal bodyguard, an estranged friend from Mello’s childhood at Wammy’s House who happens to be the very same person that saved his life months ago. A Death Note AU (after Kira).
It's been three years since Light Yagami's death. Finally putting an end to Kira, the Death Notes, all associated cults, and after insuring there were no more rogue Shinigami playing havoc with humanity, L and his people could finally come out of hiding.
Many people —important people— died but not the ones you would think. Most notably L Lawliet, Watari and even Mello were still alive and well.
L was still L, comfortably pulling the strings from behind Near and all of his well laid plans —though not going completely without a hitch— ended with the desired results, and there was nothing left for L to do but continue his career as though nothing had changed.
That is until Watari's health had started a steady decline, forcing him to hire a "companion" for his beloved adopted son. The boy was spoiled, and despite being a genius, could barely take care of himself. He was basically a huge man child and if left to his own devices, would eat nothing but sweets and probably stop brushing his teeth if not constantly given a reminder to do so.
That's where you come in, and you often wondered if Batman needed a Nanny whenever Alfred got sick, or if it was just L.

Summary
Three years after the end of the Kira investigation, Near, now 21, has run away like Mello once did and left the world of detective work behind, choosing instead to disappear into society and learn how to survive in solitude. The role of L was supposed to be played by the both of them, and he's wanted nothing to do with it if Mello isn't there to do it with him.
In the afterlife, Mello decides that not even death (or the impending apocalypse) will keep them apart any longer, and he decides to make it right before the end.

He reached a hand, slowly, into the pocket of his jeans and pulled out a picture. He told Mello he’d given him the only picture of himself in existence, but that was a lie. He’d made a copy and kept the original. He’d written Dear Mello on the back of it and nothing else. He planned on returning the real photograph when (if) he ever finished the note. He didn’t know what to write on it then; he had so much to say now. Cruelly, as life always is, it didn’t matter anymore. Mello would never get to read it anyway.
He traced the outline of Mello’s face with his finger as a tear softly landed and rolled off. “Dear Mello,” he whispered. “Dear Mello…there was so much left unsaid.”
