Erik hadn’t been able to stop thinking about how wonderful it had felt to have the telepath in his mind and how much he wanted to feel it again. He wondered if he’d need to endure another near death experience in order to be granted the privilege of Charles’s voice in his head again. As much as he liked to think of himself as in perfect control, he’d probably try to raise another submarine if that was what it would take.

Erik can feel him there like a second soul, and he sleeps soundly now, cushioned from the nightmares. They had been terrible at first, worse even than what had always plagued him. He still dreamt of the camp, mud and twisted wire and the toxic stench of death, but then he saw a beach too, the earth shifting out from under his feet in waves of hot sand, the sun wheeling closer and closer, and Charles lying wrapped in white with pennies on his eyes."

If Erik were a better man, he’d let Charles go. As it is, Erik is not a better man. In fact, he thinks he is not much of a good man at all, and undeserving of the things he loves, but he’s out of bed and taking three long strides before he can stop himself, taking Charles’ wrist in his hand and then pulling him into his chest and wrapping his arms around him so he can bury his nose into Charles’ hair.
Charles punches Erik’s chest far too gently. “I’m angry with you,” he repeats, muffled into Erik’s shoulder, but he’s melting there.
“I know,” Erik croaks.

But then out of nowhere, Erik shows up again, willing to do things Charles' way if it helps to protect the mutants taken by Trask and take him down.
