Of course, that's when Erik shows up at the mansion swearing his innocence and looking for a place to hide. Charles knows he shouldn't let him in. He really shouldn't.
But when it comes to Erik, he's never been very smart.

This fic was written for the following prompt:
November 1963: A nationwide manhunt is underway for the man suspected of killing the president. But said man manages to evade the feds in his roundabout route to North Salem, New York – where he knocks on the door of a former friend, who only hesitates for a moment before he lets him in.
Charles (who here is long before the decline depicted in DOFP and is preparing to open the school) is deeply hurt seeing Erik again: he won't leave him to be captured, but he doesn't really want him in his house, either. Erik is torn between gratitude for the protection, anger over (in his view) being dumped by Charles, and guilt over Charles's accident. (Note: Accident aside, would love if this isn't framed around Charles "forgiving" Erik for his views or actions on the beach, as often happens in reconciliation fics. :-/)
How do they find their way to some kind of understanding – and eventually, a true reunion? -

N.B. I originally wrote this in 2014. Then I rewrote it again in 2019. Now I'm doing it again in 2025. But I've not seen anything past Endgame Part 1 because I lost interest. I just want to finish this, because I keep starting a rewrite then I give up. Sorry if the timeline isn't always in line with the films/tv shows, but I worked in comic lore too and that doesn't always match up with the MCU anyway.
