Summary
Sitting in front of Rand, hair still damp from dunking his head in the god-damned bayou, is Rolan Deep. He’s halfway to death, blood staining his suit jacket, arm in a cast, in a sling, inside his torn-up shirt sleeves. He looks just as scared as Rand feels, fingers twitching with nerves. It’s a familiar sight; he had the same habit in high school. Rand remembers kicking his shin under the table during DnD when the fidgeting pissed him off one too many times. He thinks he regrets it. Rand remembers shotgunning weed together on his twin-sized bed as an apology afterwards. He doesn’t regret that.
Rolan’s asked Rand to kill him, once this is over. Sure, he might be one of those bug-monster-things, but Rand looks in his eyes and sees the same boy he's missed all this time.
They’ve missed so much time, and Rand knows Rolan feels it, too.
Set early episode 4, after Rolan discovers he's... not quite human. This fic is a spiritual successor to Tim, I Wish You Were Born a Girl, but you don't need to have read that one for this to make sense.

The answers make him feel better by only a miniscule amount. He doesn’t trust this… weird sixth sense he’s acquired. Kian said it was some kind of “power,” like the heroes running around in their underpants on TV that have been crawling out of woodwork since the seventies, but that’s bullshit. It’s all bullshit, because those heroes are probably getting their powers from like—government made chemical potions or some shit.
He asks one more question, glancing back at Rolan, Kian, and Becky in his truck.
Can I trust them?
Yes, comes the undeniable, steadfast answer.

Kian can’t help but stare at her lips. Unlike his own, hers were almost always chapped, cracked lines going up from the top to the bottom of the lips. He so badly wanted to kiss them, to feel her broken lips against his own and memorize every imperfection that Rebecca had.
It's a soft moment of silence, only interrupted by the clicking of cicadas and crickets. Being quiet around Becky was never really that awkward, more just… comforting, homey.
They were lucky to have been here this late. Becky’s parents were not really approving of Kian, and the fact that they had snuck out- because of Becky’s strict curfew, they don’t really get to hang out outside of school very often- was wondrous by itself. This moment felt wonderful.
“You’re so pretty.” Rebecca says, moving Kian's sidebangs out of the way of his face, the smile remaining on hers. Being called pretty by a goddess looking person like Becky was wonderful, ethereal even. It felt… It felt perfect, being out here with the prettiest girl in the world, stargazing and listening to her talk about her interests. This was nice.

The door creaks and snaps him out of his thoughts, the cool air hitting him smack dab in the face. Kian cringed, and stepped out, sitting down on the porch of their home. It was cold. Far, far too cold, he wouldn’t be surprised if it were to snow. It was also pretty likely that Rolan wouldn’t be leaving for work, with the roads looking icy it was sure to be a danger. Rolan was cautious about that shit.
Bringing a cig to his mouth and lighting it, the lover can feel himself get pulled into his own thoughts. He’s got a lot to think about in his eyes. He zones out pretty quickly, eyes trained on one spot. The familiar feeling of a nightmare washes over him, and he feels like he’s drowning all over again.

He found somebody in this tale, and he likes this outcome much more than the other where he’s left to die alone. The other one, it portrays betrayal, fighting. The lover is met with more rejection there than anything, it portrays a death.

Kian rushes over to the edge to try and pull Rolan up, but only manages to fall overboard himself. Rolan vaguely makes out the sound of Rachel’s voice saying something above the water. And then everything goes white.
“Fuck, dude! We were so close to the good ending,” Grizzly starts, leaning back and groaning. Condi almost opens his mouth to agree with him before Charlie speaks.
“Hold on,” he says, and they can hear the barely maintained composure in his voice, “I never said we were done.”
