Summary
The circle of L’s fingers around his wrist is beginning to burn. He wants him to let go. Why hasn’t he let go? Why won’t he let go, let Light be free of this awful thing he’s done to him? Wanting, more than captivity, more than chains, binds him here. Light thinks he’s beginning to understand the desperation that drives a fox to gnaw off its own leg when caught in a trap.
His hands, damp with sweat and saliva and vomit, clutch at his hair. He feels himself screaming before he hears it, and he knows he must look frantic as he turns toward L.
L, who is smiling.
It’s an expression Light has never seen before, one that feels foreign and ill-fitting on L’s face. His smile has always been jarring; a thin-lipped, wide-eyed thing, often close-mouthed and smug. This is something else entirely. Something hungry. His eyes are half-shut, and Light can see his teeth as it wobbles across his face.

"Shit… of all times, it had to be now…" he whispered, low, as if it were a secret.
He swallowed hard, took a breath and called out in a trembling voice:
"L… I… I need to go to the bathroom."
The sound of the chains echoed in the silence, the clinking waking the detective, who slowly lifted his eyes. In seconds, the drowsiness disappeared from his face. L’s cold, piercing gaze swept across the room and landed on the bed.
Light held his breath. L didn’t need to ask. One look at the stain on the sheets and the situation revealed itself without a word.
