Vash felt like he was choking on his guilt. He slapped his cheeriest smile on his face and didn't meet anyone's eyes. He saw their faces and the buildings and cobble stones, new water canals and gardens and solar panels, all disappearing in white light. Vash's ears were ringing. Wolfwood said something to him but he shook his head and walked faster. He was pretty sure his knee was sprained by his ungraceful landing. He was pretty sure he'd almost killed everyone here.
10 years after the end of Trimax an incident triggers the Angel Arm. Vash deals with the consequences of being a pacifist who is a gun.

“Only freaks grow feathers, Vash,” Nai had said, voice dripping with venom, even if he was only trying to tease. Nai often walked that line of being too harsh, too hurtful, when he was talking to his brother. “Are you a freak, Vash?”
“N-No!” Vash stuttered back, quickly schooling his features when he saw Rem walking towards them. “I- I don’t have feathers. I promise.”
“Ah-huh.”

That was the first of a million nights.
The first night that Vash ripped out his feathers.
It took him close to an hour to get all of the tiny downy feathers out of his arms and shoulders, and he’d had to resort to scrubbing a towel roughly down his spine to get the tiny bristles out of his back. By the time he was done, every pore on his torso was bleeding.
In a dazed panic, nervous system flooded by pain and fear, Vash had jumped into the shower and let it wash over him until the bleeding stopped and the water ran cold.
Nai had complained about the showers being cold the next morning, sending a side-eye at his brother.
Vash had remained silent.

“Took a while to find you.”
The words break through the steady sound of the shower pattering on dingy tile. Vash doesn’t turn around, focused instead on the sight of water running down the side of his nose, streaming from the ends of his ragged hair. He doesn’t move.
“What are you doing here, Wolfwood?”
“Was gonna ask the same thing of you, Eriks.”
Vash huffs a breath, but it sinks like a deflated balloon.
Vash doesn’t want to fall apart in front of his friends, but maybe friends never was the right word for what they are.
