Summary
What happened during those thirteen years Wei Wuxian was dead?
Nobody knows. For years people tried calling his spirit from the Burial Mounds, to no avail.
Less known were the years one of the Twin Jades of Gusu would spend everyday playing Inquiry in the hopes of calling his ghost, not for malicious intent, but in grief and sorrow.
Unbeknownst to them, someone would open up their eyes on day, appearance not of the monster parents would tell their children to make sure they sleep, but of a young boy, not having yet reached adulthood.

Perhaps in a different life, Wei Wuxian wouldn't have returned to Gusu with Wangji. Lan Qiren wouldn't have been given the chance to see the purity of Wei Wuxians heart, or to find fondness in his own for her. He would have seen Wei Wuxian as the threat the other clans did, and would have stood idly to the side as they tore her apart.
But this is not a different life, and Lan Qiren is not the man he was.

The embers falling from the upper levels of the building, the searing smoke which burnt with each inhale, the way the black clouds obscured every high rise around them, all of it represented the peace which the Wens had ignited.
“Wangji..” Lan Xichen tried, grabbing his wrist and gently padding at his scent gland, trying to elicit the familiarity of their clans' wooden tones. No scent could cut through the ashen smell of failure.
“Xichen, this means war.” He knew he didn’t have to explain it to his brother, Xichen understood. He knew why this was the end of everything their uncle and father had worked towards and knew even better why Wangji was angry. He was one of the only people who knew explicitly what Wangji and Wei Wuxian had been.

Gang Au where an inciting incident between Wei Wuxian and Wen Chao results in Bùshì Niǔyuē being plunged into gang wars once more. Before this, Lan Wangji had been peacefully enjoying college life after the pact made by his parents generation to leave the streets at peace.
With the Wens raising Yunmeng to the ground, the clans/gangs seek out the help of the Zǔshī of Yilling to aid them in defeating the Wen.

As soon as Wangji overheard his brother's conversation with Jin Guangyao about the supposed army of fierce corpses Wei Wuxian was building in Yiling, he had his mind made up willingly or not he was bringing Wei Ying back to Gusu. It was for his own good. It could be seen as Wangji’s selfish desire for Wei Wuxian to love him back, it could be said he became his father, but as Wangji saw it he was protecting what he held most dear.

Instead, the place was occupied by a slightly moss-covered but still the most beautiful jade statue the cultivator (Wei Wuxian) had ever seen. The jade had been masterfully chiseled into a beautiful ethereal man, sitting with perfect posture, his back straight, his head slightly bowed. The finely detailed strands of his hair flowed softly in a breeze, his eyes partially closed. The robes were detailed, his hands hovering over a guqin made out of black jade, fingertips in the middle of plucking the strings. Whoever made the statue had a good eye for details, the forehead ribbon caught in a soft breeze, tangling with the hair, the sleeves billowing softly with the caught air of the breeze the artist had imagined. It looked like the man had gone about his day and was captured in the precious stone.

A few moments later he started humming softly, with his low voice, the voice hushing all other noises. Wei Wuxian felt like he was being pulled in a trance, his whole body relaxed, his breathing heavy, and he drifted off to sleep as he whispered a few last words, "Lan Zhan... you're so..so comfortable..."
