Summary
***end of series spoiler, but I fix it so it's ok!!
Merlin refuses to accept the loss of Arthur Pendragon. After his death, he still brings him to the lake, but with the hope of resurrecting him. After his success, both he and Arthur are weak. With Morgana's servants still fighting and searching for Arthur, Gwen and Merlin agree that it would be safest for Arthur to disappear for a while. Both Arthur and Merlin aren't as strong as they used to be, but they ride off far away together (despite tensions stemming from Merlin's magic) to pass the time and regain their strength in secret.
Basically, Arthur's dream of running off and living on a farm with Merlin comes true, but he's still mad and confused about everything for a bit. They'll eventually work all of their shit out :)

Summary
Gwaine returns to Camelot after a lengthy diplomatic visit to Nemeth, only to find that Merlin has been so busy saving the kingdom in his absence that he has not even had time to shave. Spellbound by Merlin’s new look, Gwaine resolves to find a way to convince his friend to both keep the beard and let himself relax and be taken care of for a change.

Summary
The 14th century is a bad time for beards and for Merlin in general. He keeps dying of fucking plague. Nothing he tries staves it off, and no matter how many times he calls upon Arthur, the man’s useless arse remains drowned in the lake, apparently unconvinced that the apocalypse is truly upon them.
Merlin, clean-shaven out of convenience more than anything else, takes that to mean that he’s just going to have stick it out and hope for a miracle, which he does because he is not an amateur when it comes to starvation, mass quarantine, and religious condemnation.
He starts living, against all odds, a rather long existence until right up until the English roses up north begin stabbing each other with thorns.
(No one told Merlin that waiting for Arthur meant he would have to live through major historical events, which is too bad because he is terrible at living through major historical events. He grows a beard now and again to comfort himself through the ages the way most people get a pet.)

In their quest to unite Albion, their stay with the Druids of the North, where snow and freezing temperatures are a constant, Merlin and Arthur are asked to share a hut. Despite Arthur knowing everything about Merlin's magic and slowly warming up to it, there's still work to be done to be back to the friendship of before. Besides, Merlin is still keeping his love for his king a secret, one that is every day harder to keep, especially when Arthur is every day more the Once and Future King in person, more mature, stronger and so handsome! Just look at him before going hunting with the druids, with those wolf furs around his shoulders...

Summary
As Court Sorcerer, Merlin has to go with Gwaine on a diplomatic mission that will see him spend three months meeting with druids and queens. Three long months away from Camelot. Three long months away from Arthur.
Fortunately, being a sorcerer has its perks. And thanks to a certain magical crystal, he and Arthur are able to stay in touch for those three months, managing to stay close despite being apart.

Merlin and Arthur miss each other for three months and decide they never want to be apart again.

Summary
Arthur gets sent out to see the world after angering the King. He's not given much notice and is literally escorted out of the kingdom. Merlin was away visiting his mum at the time and is very upset to learn of his journey without him. So, Merlin sets off to find Arthur, he has to make sure the clotpole survives his adventure away from Camelot. Enough times passes that both Arthur and Merlin change in appearance. Why shave when you're on an adventure?

Arthur didn’t move, not even when Merlin, this odd refined older Merlin that he couldn’t even recognise anymore, grabbed the back on his neck and leaned his forehead against his. Arthur closed his eyes, but nothing helped. Merlin had taken over all his senses. Common one too, it seemed.
Merlin just wanted to go back in time to pull a prank on Arthur. It doesn’t go as planned. His plans never do. Now he and King Arthur are back in the past to make sure their present doesn’t get destroyed. Confusing, he knows. He has a headache as well.
