Dick, just fired as Robin, with a replacement lined up, doesn't believe one word she says, until she starts being honest. Until he sees a way to handle his hurt feelings.
Three years later, she's back. Not broken, not quite as desperate, and yet honest, again. Honest how she's afraid of her position as heir to the League, with an actual male heir around. Honest about her wish to get rid of said heir.
Dick has no choice, not really. He has to take Damian in. It's his son, after all.Fic is fully written and will be uploaded chapter by chapter. Upload every Wednesday and Sunday. He wanted someone to choose him first, to care for him more than themselves. And second, he knew that he did not get what he wanted. Not in his last life, not in this one. The sky was blue, Gotham crushed any light inside of it, and Jason Todd did not get what he wanted. He did not get chosen, he did not get loved, he did not get saved.
But knowing had never stopped anybody from wanting.

He’d bled out. He knew he had. If the batarang didn’t rip him away from this world on its own, then the bomb should have finished the job, and it did. Jason felt himself slip away. Once you’ve experienced death, there is no mistaking the sensation for anything else. Everything had been carried out the way it was supposed to, so how?
Jason didn’t leave the apartment for nine days. He ate canned ravioli and watched reruns of news footage covering the showdown with Joker, who had landed back in Arkham without a scratch on him. Batman saved the day again, folks. Red Hood was off the streets. Ding dong, the witch was dead.
Most hoped that the Hood was gone for good, either slain by the clown or scared away by the Batman. Either way, good riddance. Black Mask was still alive and kicking, regrettably, the fuckin’ cockroach.
And, more regrettably, so was Jason.
