“Eddie’s Top Secret Plots’ was scribbled onto the cover, along with a doodle of a cannon firing off a shot. Ah, so Eddie must have been planning out the strategy for his next session with the Party.
The temptation to snoop was sure tempting. If he knew what the Dragon-Master was gonna throw at them, he could totally psych Dustin out. It’s not like Eddie would be mad for the free mind-games. Yeah, he loved fucking with his players all the time, wouldn’t be a problem.
If the notes were all boring math calculations, Steve would just keep his mouth shut and wait until next week for Eddie to take those numbers and turn them into story-telling magic. And maybe some accents too, he loved it when Eddie broke out into an over the top British accent.
And so, Steve opened to the bookmarked page, completely unprepared for what he’d come face to face with.

Carver laughs. “You think we came unprepared? Please. My crew is far superior to yours, both in numbers and weapons, and you sailed right into my trap. Now, what do you say? Dead or alive, which one of the two should we make it? My personal preference will probably come unsurprising to you.”
His sword slides free with a metallic whir.
“Wait!”
Carver freezes, then looks around, face full of confused surprise.
Steve must say the feeling’s mutual, because he doesn’t recall speaking or standing. Still, that was very clearly his own voice just now. And still, here he is, mounting the taffrail of the Hellfire and jumping onto the deck of the other ship. As he walks closer, the confusion in Carver’s eyes morphs into hesitation, and finally recognition.
“Wait a minute,” he mutters. “You’re the Harrington boy. The Governor’s kid.”

His entire demeanor had changed. He was still locked in Tommy’s iron grip, but his posture relaxed as if he were bored, rather than on the brink of certain death.
Tommy frowned like Eddie was an imbecile. “No, Munson, that’s Commodore Harrington right there.”
Eddie grinned hard, a manic thing that still managed to light up his face. “I don’t give a shit. I’m Captain Eddie Munson.”

He had explained it all rather convincingly. A prince cursed with an ugliness so foul there was no hope for marriage without a cure. One who had been hidden away, a shame amongst his family. They couldn’t allow their own naval officers to know of his existence, not when it could cause disputes in the King’s legacy. But a low-dirty pirate being aware of his existence would be of no consequence. It was simple: take him, his bastard sister and protector, and a handful of guards overseas to the small island of Quedra, known for their powerful shamans and witches. He and his crew would help lead them to their chosen practitioner, she would provide the rest of their payment, and he’d leave him there. If he was cured, the royal family would send a ship back out to retrieve him. And if not…that was not of Eddie’s concern.

There can be no question, in the hindsight of it, that Eddie had been foolish.
But honestly—if it was good enough for old Davy Jones, then by the seas themselves: Eddie Munson had no intention of being brought low by something so childlike and fanciful as love, anyway. So he was one-hundred-percent sold on the carve-out-your-heart-against-the-pain-of-feeling thing; his heart was the sea’s alone, after all, and he would never stray from her. No greater love could ever come to tempt him better.
Which brings him to the now. Wherein he is a fool beyond the scope of words; where he is…bereft, for how blind to all he did not know he'd been; could be. Where he stands desperate for one thing alone: to give the whole of him to the one he loves. All of him. To give his heart.
Which is lost to him. Which he cast away with intention. By design.
‘Fool’ truly is too soft of a word.

Or: Eddie thought he'd be happy to roam the seas forever with no heart to weigh him down.
He never expected to meet a siren who didn't even need to ensnare his heart in order to claim him, body and soul.
It's...it's definitely a wrench in the plans, to be sure.
