Summary
Memory is a funny thing.
Some memories stand sharp and salient, landmarks amidst the stormy sea that is her mind. Others are adrift in the waves, still tangible, but free to fade in and out of view as is their wont. Still others have long since slipped beneath the waves, effectively non-existent until they snag her thoughts unexpectedly, threatening to drag her under.
Sometimes, despite her better judgement, Kiir finds herself diving below, desperately trying to grasp that which refuses to be known.

“How comforting,” Essek said dryly. He still did not pick up the cup.
“Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated, Essek. We are equals here, now.”
“Then why am I the only one in bondage?”
“A simple precaution. You understand, of course.”
Essek scoffed, a joyless grin spreading across his face. “Of course, Martinet. I understand plenty.”

Essek is held prisoner by Ludinus, who requires his help with the development of a ritual. Essek has no intention of aiding him, and instead decides to do his own impromptu psychoanalysis of his captor.
