It starts on the road to El Paso. Eddie calls Buck because the silence is too heavy, and Buck answers because of course he does. They don’t hang up. Not when Eddie reaches his mom’s house, not when Buck reads Jee a bedtime story, not when Eddie folds laundry or when Buck sings off-key in the shower.
Two weeks later, their phones show 381 hours, 12 minutes on a single call.
Professionally? It helps them focus. Socially? Nobody calls anymore, so they just text other people. Emotionally? The other’s voice is enough to keep them alive.

“You speak English.” An obvious fact but an adequate place to start. Pike seemed to share the sentiment, he lowered his arms.
