Summary
The stranger smiles, eyes wet, like Martin’s just given him everything he’s ever dreamed of and more. “Just—look around. We did it, Martin, we made it.”
Martin flinches back, out of reach of the man’s bloodstained hands, and stares at him. Something is wrong here. So, so wrong. From the blood anointing them both to the way this man says his name like there are worlds of meaning behind it, everything about this is wrong. “Did what?” he pleads. “I- I’m sorry, do I know you?”

Summary
In time, he almost forgot what he had once been able to do. Water was his most ardent foe, not an ally. Water was the bodymen’s boats, Reaper’s Barge, and Jordie’s corpse. The water had given, and could give him, nothing that he wanted. It would make no bargain with him that could be worth it– so he would not try. He eked out his fortune and his revenge with every bloody punch and petty swindle and broken bone. He ignored the hiss and slap of the filthy water in the canals that wended through the city, the roar of the waves at the harbour that smashed boats to pieces, the sinuous curl of the mist on wet nights that got you jumped if you weren’t paying close enough attention. The Ketterdam water had a touch of the mocking about it– a determination to be as awful and monstrous and polluted as he was. But Kaz didn’t need a reminder of what he’d become. The water had his brother; it would not have him, too.

Summary
The great Eye that had replaced the sun is withering, sinking in on itself and weeping green. He doesn't need the Beholding's help to know that other horrors around the world are dissolving too, countless agonies peeling back to release their victims.
It's the ultimate cruelty that, for this to work, Jon had to die first.
Above him, Helen claps her palms together. “How do you feel about a suggestion?”
Or: at the end of it all, Martin makes a choice-- and four years earlier, Martin wakes up. -

Summary
This isn’t quite what he wanted, but it’s something, at least. He’ll make do. If he closes his eyes, perhaps he can pretend that this is a grave, and he is nothing but a corpse that hasn’t yet learned that it’s time to stop moving.
Wilbur dies in a dark room, rubble pressing in around him, his father's sword through his chest. Wilbur wakes in a dark ravine, dust pouring from the wound and the stone beneath him trembling with his fear.
Wilbur wakes when he's certain he shouldn't. Wilbur wakes, and nothing feels the same.
(Or, in which Wilbur becomes tied to Pogtopia after his death. Nothing at all changes, and yet everything does. And there are still people who don't want to let go.)
