Mirabel settled down in between the two roots next to her tío, gathering her skirt neatly in her hands and smoothing it out on her lap.
The night around them was just bordering on cool, but the animals and the insects were active. Through the trees they had a good view of the village and Casita.
Mirabel breathed out, breath caught somewhere between something wistful and sorrowful.
"When I stepped into that river, there were ghosts speaking to me."
Bruno looked up sharply from where he was tracing the edge of his fingernail around the pale crescent of an old scar.
Mirabel stared forward, voice soft, absent of the youth and joy that usually colored it.
"I stepped into the waters and I could hear the voices, when I moved my eyes it was like… like seeing an echo. There were men on horses, people on the shore."
She looked down at a spot on her skirt and pulled it taut so she could fidget with the embroidery, "I saw Abuelo Pedro."

“Fuck it,” Eddie mumbled before unlocking the phone again and opening his text thread with Buck. They hadn’t texted since Buck asked him if he wanted a scone or a danish from their favorite coffee shop before their last shift. Eddie sighed and pressed the corner of the phone against his forehead.
He didn’t want to ask for help. He could spend another hour circling around the city. But he didn’t want to. He wanted this awful horrible day to be done. He wanted to hold his child and pretend for a little bit that everything was still whole. He sighed again before pressing call and pressing the phone to his ear.
