“You’re a dumbass,” Liam mutters. His voice is tight, like it’s coiled up in his throat, like he’s threading it through his teeth. “You’re such a dumbass! Why’d you do that?”
Theo slumps back against the couch, blinking sweat out of his eyes. It stings. “He was aiming for you.”
“Yeah, no shit, because I was the one standing in the open like an idiot.” Liam sounds like he’s trying to stay angry but it keeps slipping out of his grip. Too much worry leaking into his tone, like an oil spill. “God. You’re the worst.”
“I’m bleeding out and you’re still giving me shit,” Theo musters, trying to smile. “At least I’m consistent.”

Zuko took a breath, then started talking. If he wobbled on his feet, Sokka might have imagined it, because the other boy immediately uprighted himself and continued on like nothing happened. “First: I’m fine.” Debatable. “Second: Long story. I’m being… targeted. I was supposed to head to this place off the coast of the Kyoshi island, but then my. Ship exploded.” He paused here, as if still processing it, before uneasily answering again. “Third… uh, what was the question again?”
Sokka, immaturely, was about to interrogate the boy again, but he didn’t get the chance: Prince Zuko started hacking and coughing, and then, in one sudden, dramatic display, collapsed.

He tries not to look back when he leaves, but he does anyway. Catches Liam’s face on the porch, stupidly fond smile curving his mouth. Liam’s got this way of making Theo change his mind. Maybe it’ll pay off, he doesn’t know. For now it’s looking back, tomorrow it’ll be going down with the ship.

“Yeah,” breathes Liam, “same.” The clock ticks.

Then they’re pulling their gloves off, revealing pale, half-bruised knuckles of the human variation, and their mask is dissolving, giving way to big blue-purple eyes and an achingly familiar jet-black cowlick. “Who,” says Keith Kogane, in that low-pitched rumble that makes Lance’s stomach roil in the good way—holy fuck—“is this guy you’re trying to get over?”

Summary
It’s in the middle of scanning the last bottle of green tea that Itadori properly looks up. Eye contact with him is a physical, unexpected shock, a crunch of imaginary static snapping through Megumi and leaving his hands twitching at his sides.
"Hey." Itadori blinks, wide and earnest. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
The tea sloshes backwards in the bottle he’s holding. Megumi focuses on this until his vision steadies.
"No," he says. "I don’t think so."
In the aftermath, Itadori loses his memories instead of his life. Megumi grieves nonetheless.
