Chapter 1: I Know I Shall Love You

Chapter Text

---2019---

As practice dawned down, the MSBY team cleaned up the gym and headed towards the locker room, Meian and Atsumu were in conversation when Hinata interrupted, asking if they wanted to join him, Inunaki and Barnes for lunch at some diner not too far from the gym. "Ah, sorry Shoyo-kun, I can't, I've already got some plans" Atsumu said, with an apologetic look on his face, "Oh its alright, maybe next time yeah?" Hinata responded, shrugging his shoulders, Atsumu had nodded with a bright smile as Hinata looked over to Meian, and before he could ask, he said he'd go.

The locker room, as normal, was filled with simple chatter, such as plans for the weekend, or upcoming games. Bokuto and Inunaki were excitedly sharing strategies for their game against the Adlers in the coming week, occasionally teasing Hinata, as they always did when a game against the Adlers was coming up.

In the next few minutes, the crowd in the locker room shrank from 10, to 6, then to 2. Each member saying goodbye before making their leave. The two men left in the room were Atsumu and Sakusa. They both shared soft glances as they picked up their bags and made their leave together, the both of them climbing into Sakusa's car and driving to their apartment.

The two had lived together since they got out of high school. They found the apartment when going around and familiarising themselves with the new area that was Ohasuhigashi. Neither of them had ever been to the Osaka, so they decided to move early, ensuring they wouldn't get lost. The move was difficult for Atsumu. It had been the first time in 19 years he had been without Osamu, his brother. His twin. The person who understood him the best and always knew what to do. Sakusa knew Atsumu was taking it hard, so he did his best to help is partner adjust.

Now, 6 years later, Atsumu was doing way better. Being able to see his brother whenever he wanted off season, being able to call him whenever, and when Osamu could, he would always do his best to make it to Atsumu's games. This meant that the two could focus on each other, instead of Atsumu's homesickness. Sakusa was proud of Atsumu for being able to overcome it. He knew he could. He knew that Atsumu was strong, he had always had faith.

The apartment wasn't big, but it wasn't small either. Over the years the home became theirs, plus their cat’s. They had taken in a cat in and around their second year of living together. And by 'taken in' Atsumu had found a stray kitten out in the rain and couldn't just leave it there. So, they ended up taking her to the vet, and taking it in. They now call 'Carrot' their kid. A fluffy calico that roamed the apartment with grace.

Picures of old high school volleyball teams, group photos with friends, and some of course, of the two flooded the walls. The kitchen always smelled like freshly bakes cookies, mainly because Atsumu loved to bake, though, he'd never admit it, and Sakusa would never mention it. While it was true that Osamu was the cook of the Miya family, because Atsumu couldn't cook for shit, he was a pretty good baker.

Cat toys occasionally lying around, they tried to clean up as much as possible, but with a cat, they knew they weren't going to win. Their bedroom littered with decor that matched their personality, yet clean. In the hallway, there was always stood a vase filled with sunflowers and lavender. The sunflowers from Sakusa to Atsumu, and the lavender from Atsumu to Sakusa. Their favourites.

The two were enjoying their date, having a nice meal at a restaurant that was so fancy that Atsumu thought Sakusa was crazy for bringing him here, having never been to a place so elegant. The fanciest place atsumu had been, was a restaurant in his hometown, from when he and his brother turned 18.

The young couple were walking in a beautiful area not too far from the restaurant. Due to it being 11pm and somewhat secluded, there wasn't anyone else around. Hand in hand, and Atsumu's head resting softly on the latter's shoulder they walked until they reached a large opening, far from any streetlight and crowd noises. They stopped and sat under a Sakura tree, admiring the celestial glimmering of the stars, which had scattered across the night's sky like the way it would if you were to drop an open tub of glitter on the floor, a mess, but if you're to truly take time and admire can be calmingly beautiful and bright.

"You know" Sakusa spoke up. "When I first was you, I had no idea I would be alongside you on a gorgeous night like this" Atsumu's body was now fully turned to Sakusa's. "And never did I think I would be asking you". He stopped speaking, for just a slight moment to prop himself on one knee, fully facing Atsumu before pulling a box out of his pocket. He continues "Atsumu Miya, my love, the person who showed me I was something, and was someone deserving of love, and the person who let me love him like the grass loves the sun, will you marry me, so I could have the honour, of being your husband?" He opens the box to display a gold band, with an intricate vine design treasuring a lavender coloured amethyst right in the middle.

Soft tears were already streaming down Atsumu's face before Sakusa could finish, accompanied by a large glowing smile. Sakusa wouldn't have known it was night by the way Atsumu smiled, his smile could light a room brighter than the sun ever could. As Sakusa finished Atsumu softly leaped onto him, wrapping his arms around anywhere he could grab while nodding softly as saying "yes, yes, I will, I would love to" into the crook of Sakusa's neck.

The newly engaged couple, the blond resting his head on the ravenette's chest, softly sniffling every minute or so, lay in the field gently covered in Sakura petals falling from the changing of seasons. Once Atsumu had managed to stop the tears, he sat up to face Sakusa resting on his knees, Sakusa slipped the ring on his hand. Making eye contact, Sakusa held his beloved's hand pulling it up to his lips, giving it a soft, but meaningful, loving kiss, as Atsumu looked back into Sakusa's eyes, his own melting to adoration and love.

"I love you" Sakusa whispered.

"I love you too, Omi-Kun"
