Chapter Text
---2019---
The next morning, as the sun cast its rays of morning chill into the bedroom, Sakusa’s eyes fluttered open, and taking a deep breath, along with as much of the scene before him. His fiancé, his head laying on his chest, hand rested softly next to him. His eyes then darted to the clothes scattered around the room, a product of the night before.
‘Right’ he thought. He had finally asked the question. A warm fuzzy feeling seized his heart, like flowers growing on stone, making something feel extraordinary. He looked down at Atsumu just before his eyes opened too, to which Sakusa gave a soft smile.
“Hi” Atsumu greeted him, with a broad smile. Sakusa’s supposed heart of stone had melted, as it often did when catching sight of Atsumu’s smile. “Hi” He responded back.
The couples' mornings were often silent, as neither of them had properly woken up yet. Now, with Atsumu stood in the kitchen, staring at the coffee maker waiting for the second mug to fill up, and Sakusa’s arms wrapped around his waist, Atsumu began to speak; “I can't wait to tell my brother and ma’, we had a bet on who would get engaged first”. “I think you're just exited to rub it in, Atsu” Sakusa said, with his voice slightly muffled as his face was buried into the crook of Atsumu’s neck. Atsumu didn’t respond to that, instead the corner of his lips lifted into a smile.
The drive from their home to Osamu’s took 40 minutes. There, instead of only being Osamu, Suna and Komori were there, his roommates. Together the 5 of them were good friends. Komori and Sakusa were cousins, so, once they got there, they made idle chat about how their lives are going. In the kitchen was Atsumu, Osamu and Suna, the tree of them were in most of the same classes together in high school, so they were all close.
The 5 of them ended up in the living room chatting about nothing and everything, when a knock on the door caught everyone's attention. Atsumu shot up and rushed to answer it. When the door opened, Ms. Miya stood in, greeting her sons and their friends, she took off her shoes and left them by the door.
Once everyone had caught up, and everyone was comfortable, their hands wrapped around a mug of tea or coffee and snacks scattered on the coffee table, Atsumu began to speak. “Actually...” He took a pause before continuing. “We have some news”.
The small crowd had turned their heads, focusing their attention on the blond, who had both his hand behind his back. He smiled nervously and he pulled his hand out, to show off the ring, sitting peacefully on his ring finger. “We got engaged!!” he then said, his voice going a bit squeaky from excitement. Sakusa just watched Atsumu, smiling in adoration of the excitement his fiancé had.
“Huh??”
The next few moments were filled with, shock, coming from Osamu and Komori, confusion, from Suna, and excitement from Ms. Miya as she stood to hug her son, and future son in law. Once the hugging was over, the couple turned to the three with faces Atsumu would describe as ‘stupid’ if it weren’t for the situation. Suna was the one to speak up first, “Since when were you two together?”. Now it was the couples turn to be confused. “What do you mean?” Atsumu asked hesitantly, as if it were some sort of trap. Before anyone else spoke, Osamu stood hands balled into a fist “SINCE WHEN WERE YOU TWO DATIN’???” he yelled.
“Since our second year?? I told you both??” “We told all of you??” Atsumu stood as well with his voice raising, looking to Osamu and Suna. Silence had long owned the room before, finally, Komori had spoken up “So, you both mean to tell us.... that you've been dating for 6 years, and somehow, we didn't find out...?” “Uhhh, yeah” Sakusa replied. Komori had then whispered, “You’re gay...” Sakusa could only stare back. Sakusa knew his cousin would accept him, but for some reason, it never crossed his mind to tell him. All he could do was give a slight nod.
It was only then, that what Atsumu said hit them. “YER GETTING MARRIED??” Osamu yelled, this time louder than the first. All the couple could do was smile sheepishly and nod.
It had taken a while for everyone to calm down, but once they did, the couple had explained that they had been together since their second year and have been going strong since. Atsumu couldn't wrap his head around the fact Osamu nor Suna never caught on. “I was always talkin’ about him” he’d proclaim, along with others such as “I was always over at his, whenever I could” and “He was over at our house a lot”. “I mean, we even have a cat together” Atsumu then said, as if that cleared everything up.
Komori was calmer than the other two, he knew his cousin, he knew that Sakusa Kiyoomi was quiet and kept to himself, although, he would have liked to have been told. In fact, he never would have said it, but Komori was proud of Sakusa. He was happy he found someone who loved him just as much as he loved them. He was always worried his introverted, ‘too good for other people’ personality would drive everyone away, and he knew that he also had a bad habit of pushing people away, even though that couldn't be further from his actual personality.
The living room had been full of lively chat for a while, the group giving their congratulations to the newly engaged couple. Atsumu had teased Osamu on their bet from years ago, on who could get engaged first, and while Osamu acted as though he couldn't care less, he was ecstatic for his twin. He had always been the ‘people’ person, making friends and keeping them, Atsumu, while being a good person at heart, he knew that he came off cocky and confident. Osamu still remembers one time in middle school, he left a small group of friends he had made, simply because they were cruel to Atsumu. Not to his face, but in speaking. He would constantly hear how Atsumu was “Brutally honest” and “A huge asshole”. Sure, Atsumu was quite blunt, but being the only person who would understand him the way he did, he knew Atsumu didn't mean any harm.
“You know” Ms. Miya spoke up, looking towards Atsumu and Sakusa, before looking at Atsumu specifically. “Your father would be so proud of you," she stopped, and just then she added, “Both of you” while looking at Osamu. “You’re good kids, good people” “and you're both doing great things”. A soft smile was now proudly lighting up her face as a soft silence lingered. “Thank you” Osamu whispered, not wanting to be overly loud. There was a moment of nothingness before Atsumu then spoke, “We were going to go tell him about our news on the way back home” looking at Sakusa he gave a soft, sombre smile. Sakusa just smiled back, taking Atsumu’s hand and interlacing their fingers.
The rest of the day had gone by peacefully before the couple headed home, making a stop at the graveyard to tell Mr. Miya that his son was engaged now. Atsumu told his dad that he was happy. Atsumu visited his dad whenever he could, filling him in on every little detail of his life, just as he would when his father was alive.
Atsumu could remember coming home from school every day with Osamu as they both sat either side of the bed, cautious of the oxygen machine and went on about how their day at school was. Atsumu rested his head on his lover's shoulder as he said his goodbyes. Sakusa then began to speak, “I'll take care of your son, I promise.” He gave a solemn nod to the grave, as if Mr. Miya were standing in front of them.
They both turned and made their way out of the graveyard and headed towards the car.
“You promise?”
“I promise”.
