Ren could see that Akechi was deadly serious. Could he truly do that? Just abandon his friends like that? Are they his friends? He helps them with their problems. They don’t seem to care about his problems. Their entire “friendship” is built upon him helping them and them teaching him some skill he can use. Multiple times, he’s been reminded, “that was our deal”. Does he even matter to them? Would they care if he left? “I’ll think about it,” he says after some time.

Was. It's useless now that Akechi knows, but Akira smiles as he speaks. He's cornered himself, mate in one, but it won't be the first time he's died. At worst he'll restart his probation again, back in April.
At best, they'll move to step two of his real plan, tearing apart Shido's conspiracy one crooked heart at a time until Akechi is as free as his past allows and resoundingly not dead. It'd be easy to resent the world for demanding Akira save it, but at least it's had the decency to let him save his friends along the way. All of them, even the one who only makes the job harder.
