    “What?” Tim asks, because Tim is confused– he knows this is Jason Todd, kinda hard to miss with the red helmet and when the dude tried to blow up Dick and Bruce about a week earlier in the same outfit, but what the actual fuck is he doing in San Francisco–

    “You’re crying.” Red Hood repeats, forgoing a one handed grip on his weapon to gesture to his– well– his everything.

    Tim moves his hand up to his cheeks because he is definitely not crying over something as stupid as his dinn–

    Huh.

    Okay.

    Maybe he is.

      “I’m trying my damn best!” Tim screams, yells, choked up with his chest heaving in puffed breaths he can control as much as he controls his face twisting into grief. He feels red hot angry tears flowing freely down his cheeks as the careful spider web of lies splinters– lies that it’s alright, lies that it’s going to be fine, lies that he needs to get one thing right today, one thing done, one thing he could control over the uncontrollable car crash that is his year finished and over– and here is Red fucking Hood telling him he’s fucked up yet again like he fucking always does. “What do you fucking want from me?! My dad’s been pronounced braindead! I’ve been benched from Robin until I bother to grieve him, and Dick looks at me like I’m fucking fragile, and I just can do nothing fucking right–”

      The dam’s been broken and Tim can’t keep all of his bottled up compartmentalizing inside of him.

They’re going to analyse the past year in as few words as possible, or discuss the treatment, to give Jason the illusion that he has any control over it. Or maybe they will get back to the topic of how Bruce simply cannot do what Jason wants him to; the judge, jury, and executioner lecture that Jason never really needed, because deep down he knows that his cries and requests were selfish. Childish, even.

    But the silence stretches. It starts feeling more like peace.

    “I love you,” Bruce says, and that’s not code for anything.

    Except for the part where Superman hadn't been seen in at least a week and nobody knew why, Lois was acting kind of weird, and Bruce Wayne was insisting that Clark was the only reporter he'd allow to run a feature on the crashed alien ship in the park, since Wayne Enterprises had been granted control of the site. And the way Clark felt every time Wayne looked at him a little too long definitely wasn't helping.

    But it was fine. Clark was normal, there was nothing wrong with him, and everything was fine.

    Bruce, no last name, escapes from the hospital after surviving a car crash. All he has is his name, his body, and the vague feeling that something isn't right. All he knows is that Gotham will eat him alive if he doesn't take the first bite. Landing a job with Two-Face is his first step, quickly spiralling out of control as the Something in his mind gives him skills far beyond his age. Skills that kill Gotham's worst of the worst, skills that attract a Bat and its brood.

    He wanted a quiet life, but it's Gotham. Bruce is plunged head-first into the search for a dead-boy and into fights to separate himself from an identity others want to drown him in.

    “It’s pronounced neece.” Dick said, before he could stop himself. Bruce would’ve corrected it, but it was something so ingrained in him it was hard to let it slide. Jason stopped aiming and rolled his eyes.

    “Of course you know that.” Jason shook his head. “I bet one of Bruce’s fancy tutors-”

    “I used to live there.” Dick said, cutting him off. Jason gave Dick a lot of flack for the fact that he got the Wayne sliver spoon placed in his hands first and earlier, which was fair, but this was different. This was from before.

    “What?” Jason stood up straight.

    “I spent the winters there when I was in the circus.” Dick shrugged. “My parents loved the beaches so sometimes we’d stay longer too. It was some of the longest stretches of time I’d spend in one place, I think.” He cleared his throat, “well, before moving here.”

    “Kid,” Jason interrupted. “Enough statistics. What the hell is this about?”

    Robin slowly lowered the tablet with his powerpoint presentation and looked up at Red Hood.

    “You care about Gotham,” Robin summarised. “Gotham needs Batman. Batman is missing and so is Nightwing. We need you to fill in for Batman.”

    “You want me to cover Batman’s patrols?” Jason clarified.

    “No,” Robin said. “I want you to be Batman.”

    Jason bluescreened.

     

    (Or: Batman and Nightwing mysteriously disappear before Red Hood has even started antagonising them, Robin is desperate, Gotham needs Batman, and Red Hood is Batman-Shaped.)

    John Constantine sat quietly rubbing his temples with his hands. He was fighting the urge to not pull out a cigarette and light it. He knew this meeting would be bad as soon as the Bat called him here for a favor he knew it was going to get messy. Batman never needed him for favors unless it was serious. According to Batsy, a group of people called the League Of Assassins are joining up with an unknown cult. It seemed John was the best bet, he does have quite the experience with cults.

    So far they weren't getting anywhere and it had been two weeks, the only thing that John has noticed is how what the bats call the Lazarus Pits, looks suspiciously like ectoplasm. Boiling ectoplasm. But still ectoplasm. He really didn't want to have to ask Danny for help, but if those pits truly were ectoplasm he would need his nephew's help.

    Or when The League of Assassins starts acting up and joining forces with an unknown cult, Batman contacts John Constantine for help.

The cage is fit with iron bars, a rusty metal frame, and a large lock attached to the door. All green, of course. Some would call it garish and cartoonish. Hal calls it creative and why thank you green lantern for adding some whimsy to this place.

    After an unfortunate encounter with a new rogue Nightwing, Red Robin, and Robin find themselves on the Watchtower surrounded by an entirely too young version of the Justice League. Can they get back without changing everything?
