Summary
Exploring a Waxer who deserted after Umbara. A Waxer who’d been slowly dying inside throughout the war, getting more and more burnt-out as he’s put in charge of more and more troopers who keep dying no matter how much he tries to save them.
He was the first one to truly realize just how far Krell’s treachery had gone, and when he woke up in an eerily quiet battlefield with his armor’s vitals sensors half-destroyed, he realized that he was left behind. By the time he managed to drag himself back to base in salvaged gear, he’s already marked as KIA, Boil has already pulled himself back together after breaking down from his loss of his best friend (at least, to the outside observer).
It didn't take Waxer long to realize he couldn't do this anymore...
Loosely part of my Hard Knocks 'Verse Series, but can be read as a stand-alone fic!

“I couldn’t find the flowers you wanted,” Anakin shouts, out of breath in his ceremonial garb, before bending over to put his hands on his knees to try to catch his breath.
Boil looks confused as he picks up the basket of flowers imported from both Obi-Wan’s birth-planet, and the planet he grew up on before joining the Galactic Army.
“Aren’t these them?”
Anakin glances over at the basket of flowers before turning to Cody, looking betrayed. “Did you have those the whole time?”
Cody shrugs, looking unbothered - as always- and takes the basket of flowers from the still confused Boil. “Whoops.”
Or: It is the event of the year that everyone is talking about, but possibly no one is happy about - except Obi-Wan and Jango (who is only briefly mentioned).

Waxer sighed. His fingers stilled. “I just… I have this memory of her as a little girl, but she’s grown since we last saw her. So I don’t actually know what she really looks like, you know? And when I think about when we get to Ryloth, I’m just wondering if… if we’ll recognize her. If too much has changed.”
“She can’t have gotten that big,” Boil replied. He reached up and blindly grabbed Waxer’s wrist, giving it a squeeze. “Does it really matter, though?”
“What do you mean?” Waxer asked.
Boil frowned thoughtfully. He tugged on Waxer’s wrist to get him back to his head rub, then let go when Waxer started moving again. “I don’t know,” he said eventually. “I guess… we’re going to Ryloth to see Numa, but… but it’s not just about her, you know? We’re going together, that’s what matters to me.”
He couldn’t see Waxer’s face, but he could hear the smile in his voice. “You’re right, love,” Waxer said fondly. “That’s the best part.”
Boil and Waxer both went to Ryloth during the war. Ten years later, Boil returns alone.

“Looks fine to me,” Boil says. “As long as there’s no murder and death or something it’ll be fine, we saw much worse at her age.”“We were trained for war,” Waxer says. “She isn’t. We saw holos of what war would be like so we got used to it from an early age, but I don’t want Numa to get used to that in the first place.”
Boil sighs. “Waxer, it’s just people arguing. It’s funny. Look, she’s laughing, it’s fine.”
