EDIT: Errr just re reading this this morning. Umm maybe there should be a trigger warning about food. One character is thinking about another's food intake. It's not a big deal in the story but I don't want to upset anyone who has problems with the thought of someone thinking about what they eat. On the confidence course in 1990, Sergeant Sullivan told recruit Cope that there were no faggots in his Marine Corps. They both knew it was a lie, but that hadn't stopped it from becoming Cam's mantra since then. Even as it became clear that no Marine Corps that included Sullivan was without homosexuals. Even as Sullivan threw his life away
No faggots in the Marine Corps meant that Cam had to keep his shit locked down, just like Sullivan had told him to. So that's what he's done. Things got a bit easier in 1993 when "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" passed and the military stopped actively hunting the homosexuals in the ranks. Cam stopped pretending to be interested in dating women and settled quietly into government sanctioned, self imposed celibacy.
Now it's 2011, and with the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Cam finds himself a 38 year old virgin on a boys trip to Vegas, and for the first time facing the prospect of having sex without needing to fear being found out, and two marine buddies determined to get him laid.

He takes it minute after minute, day after day, reluctant to let the way his heart aches every time he spots a mop of brown curls somewhere outside affect him; it still does, but - thankfully or regretfully - it's never Cope. He tries not to keep tabs, consciously ignoring all and any news about Cope's unit, but rumours and chitchat reach him anyway; he ignores them.
And then fucking NATO decide to bomb Yugoslavia, and he's thrown into the very thick of it.
