Summary
In the midst of the final battle against Vecna, the creatures from the deep abyss are released upon the party as Vecna’s last ditch effort to go down fighting. A new anomaly makes itself known, a creature unlike the demogorgons they have been up against thus far.
As Mike’s instincts fail him and he trickles two steps behind in the face of surprise, he risks almost collapsing along with the Upside Down. Had El not closed the gate when she did, he wouldn’t have made it out.

The last time he’d stood this close to the edge, Will had been gone, he’d thought he was dead. Nothing had mattered anymore, except protecting his friends, keeping those he had left safe. He hadn't wanted to live then, not without Will. He didn’t want to live now. Not because Will was gone—he was just across town in Mike’s room, probably not thinking about him or where he was for even a second—but because he didn’t deserve to. Because he was wrong, because he was sinful, because he didn’t matter, because nobody needed him and they never had. He’d just wanted them to need him because he’d needed them.
All he ever did was hurt the people he needed. Why would anyone ever need him? He was–

It's October 1986, the Byers have been living with the Wheelers for 3 months now, and Mike can't sleep through the night, waking to nightmares and struggling to reconcile his growing awareness of his feelings for Will with the expectations of everyone around him. Mike wakes up to a voice repeating his name. He groans and rolls over, trying and failing to get that voice to leave him alone. That is, until he realizes who this voice is. Shit. He thinks. Mike is sprawled across his bed, hair smashed flat against his pillow, wearing a rather embarrassing My Little Pony t-shirt Holly gave him as a birthday present. And Will Byers is looking down at him with that cute, teasing smile of his. Not that he thinks Will is cute or anything, well he is, but that's a totally normal thing to think about your best friend, right?
“It’s about time,” Will says, grinning, “Are you sick or something?” He asks, pressing a hand to Mike’s forehead.
Mike feels heat rush to his face, as he feels Will’s palm against his skin.
“It’s spring break! Can’t a guy sleep in?” Mike says, sure his face is still red, although he can’t figure out why.
“It’s 2:00! I was getting worried.”
“Yeah, yeah,” For some reason, Mike is eager to feel Will’s touch again. “I still don’t want to get up, do you wanna stay here and here about my new campaign idea?”
“Uh— yeah for sure!”
Mike grabs Will’s hand and pulls him onto his bed, fingers tingling with the contact.
