“Oh the truth is much less exciting, sweetling.” The Fae hummed, grip tightening to border on painful “You were stolen from me as a babe. Hidden away in the human realm.” Jaskier’s breath stuck in his throat. “It took me ages to find you again, dear heart. Only to find you trailing after a Witcher of all things. Barbaric beings.” The fae huffed, grip loosening and fingers resuming their idle stroking. “And when he wished you away, well.” Jaskier swallowed around the lump in his throat.
“You’re saying that I’m what?” He managed to scrape out past the hurt he felt at the mere mention of Geralt. “A changeling?”
“No, you’re not an exchanged child.” The fae tilted his chin up urging Jaskier to look at him. “You’re my child.”
“Fuck.”Or:
“If life could grant me one wish, it would be to take you off my hands.” Geralt says ‘wish’ instead of ‘blessing’. A difference so simple, so innocuous, It shouldn’t have mattered. Except that it did.

Summary
Geralt finds him in a tavern. Dingy and damp, smelling of puke. Jaskier strums his lute atop a wooden table, dressed in vibrant blues as the drunks around him cheer, cacophonize alongside the rough drag of his voice, the rawness and the ache in it. Geralt's never hated a sound more.
Jaskier belts: Burn, Butcher, Burn.

“You think that would please you?” Geralt’s voice was still too empty for Jaskier’s liking, lacking the usual subtle hints of humor or annoyance or whatever other emotions his bard was able to coax from him, but the question was promising.
“Elaborate?”
Geralt gestured vaguely “The coast. Us. Together.”
"Us? Together? Of course it would please me. We're best friends. We've been through so much together! I've been there for you through thick and thin, singing the glories of your victories, patching you up when your victories are considerably less glorious- Not even to mention! The mere fact that I've been around for so long! I'm human, Geralt. My life is short. Do you really think I'd spend so much of it intertwined with yours if being together with you wasn't what pleased me?" -was what Jaskier would have said, had it not been for what saying so would imply.
"Well," he said instead. "Yes, I suppose."

Summary
Geralt has lost everything. Vesemir has betrayed him, so he can’t go home. Yennifer has betrayed him and taken Ciri from him. Even Roach is gone. He’s never felt so alone and he yearns for the comfort of Jaskier’s enduring optimism and incessant chatter. He has betrayed Jaskier, however. He cast him aside on a mountain top, lashing out at him with a vicious tirade which the poor man had neither expected nor deserved. He needed Jaskier now more than ever and if anything that bitch Yennifer had said was true, then Jaskier needed him now, too. Even if he won’t stay, Geralt can at least give him the apology that is long overdue. He owes him that much at least but he desperately hopes that he’ll stay by his side, where he has belonged all along, to help him to find his daughter.

Jaskier doesn’t ask for a lot. He’ll take what little he can scrape off the floor. A twitch of a smile, a soft-spoken word, a begrudgingly offered hand, anything. If that is the most he can get, he’ll satisfy himself with it. Or, at least, he will learn to. He’ll learn to cherish that half-smile, that hint of fondness that sometimes shines through, because a gift is a gift, no matter how small.
It doesn’t matter that the love Jaskier sings about will forever remain unknown to him.

Jaskier has zero intention of sharing the degrading experience of getting tortured. Ever. He’ll bury the memories and someday they’ll be as scabbed over as Caingorn was.
Which had been completely, absolutely, fine. And the only reason that wound is bleeding a little now is because fucking Geralt came out of nowhere—after the most humiliating experience of his entire life—and reopened the fucking thing. But that’s fine because he’ll leave and return to the terror of his smuggling work and forget about Geralt all over again. There’s nothing hard drink and the constant danger of execution won’t get his mind off. Because there’s something therapeutic about fearing for one’s life that makes anything not of immediate concern go away.
So yes, things were just fine before Geralt showed up.
Two years post-Caingorn, Geralt rescues Jaskier from prison and sends him with Ciri to Kaer Morhen. However, Geralt suspects Jaskier is hiding serious trauma.

"Really?" Ciri ask and there is something excited and hopeful in her tone of voice.
"No." Yennefer grits through her teeth. "That is absolutely ridiculous. Don't -" But she doesn't get to finish that sentence. She's obviously in a lot of pain.
Geralt doesn't comment, as he's dying. Actually dying. Very nearly dead really.
"Well, I do." Jaskier stubbornly says. He's like 99 percent sure he does. "And she'll be able to help." He's about 45 percent sure of that. But it's all he has to offer in their current situation of being completely fucked.

Jaskier is all but sure that he doesn’t back away, even though every fibre of his very being tells him to and the ground beneath his feet seems to drop away with every syllable that leaves Geralt’s mouth- and he’s almost certain that he doesn’t wince even though the words dig into him like teeth. Maybe it’s the wind that’s changed or literally anything else, but something shifts in Geralt’s eyes and his voice dies away halfway through his accuse.
“I’m leaving”, he spits out after a moment of tense silence, hands balled into fists and shoulders still rising and falling too hard with every slow, forced breath, “before I say something I’ll regret. Don’t come after me”
“But-“, Jaskier starts when Geralt pushes past him and towards the woods without a single, backwards glance, “but, you will come back, right?”

He was older now, but hardly so, and the only notable change was that his hair was to his chin and a stubble dusted his jaw. After finishing a nearby contract Geralt decides to shelter from the rain at an inn in a small village. The same inn Jaskier is performing at after years of no contact.
