Sasha carefully slipped from the crowd and Anne watched as she moved away from the townspeople. Her brisk steps turned into a jog, and by the time she reached the town sign, she was full-on running towards Anne. Her sheathed sword bounced against her side and her hair blew loose behind her.
“Anne!” Sasha shouted, disbelief and desperation edging her voice. Her boots hit the ground hard, thump thump thumping as she stepped onto the footbridge.
Anne finally shook out of her state of shellshock just as Sasha knocked into her. She stumbled back a few steps, Sasha’s arms holding her tight and steady.

“Hey, Anne?”
Anne’s eyes snap open, and they fill with the same soft warmness that Sasha doesn’t deserve. The tears fall, and the salt stings the cut on her cheek. “Maybe you’re better off without me.”
The look of helpless realization that falls over Anne’s face makes Sasha look away. She forces her hand to let go of Anne’s. It’s not hard; both of their palms are sweating. She slips free easily.
She falls for half a second.
Two hands wrap around her wrist, squeezing so tightly that they would surely leave a bruise. She looks up. Anne’s lips are pressed together, and there’s nothing but raw determination in her eyes.

Anne collapses on her makeshift bed, exhausted. She felt numb the whole ride back to Wartwood from Toad Tower. Only now does she allow herself to cry, to let the emotions wash over her like the gross water at the lake. Except the tears won’t come. All she sees is Sasha, letting go of her hand. Falling, and being caught by Grime. At least Sasha is alive. But that doesn’t guarantee that Anne will see her again, or that, if she does, they’ll be on the same side. That they’ll even be friends anymore.
Or, coming home after Toad Tower and losing Sasha, Anne misses her friends.
