When Merlin's magic is exposed shortly before season 2 starts, the path of destiny starts changing forever. Now on the run with Arthur, Morgana, and Gwen. Merlin hopes to convince Arthur that magic is totally good instead of him and Morgana just being an exception. Morgana, meanwhile, hopes to convince him to usurp his father. As allies are gathered and Arthur realizes the injustice in his kingdom, it looks more and more like he will have to act in a drastic way. A way he dreads.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin are growing closer and closer and might just have feelings for each other. Something they probably should be better about realizing, considering the example of Gwen and Morgana right next to them.

Merlin wakes to the sound of his wooden, frail bedroom door creaking open. Through his tired eyes he watches a figure slip past the threshold–familiar but worrying for this isn’t something that they have done before–and shut the door with a gentle click, so as to not wake his mentor on the other side of it.
“Arthur?” Merlin sits up in his bed, his thin blanket pooling around his waist. The moon shines in from the small window near the ceiling, helping the adjustment of his vision to the darkness. He hopes the redness leftover from his earlier crying isn’t obvious with the streak of moonlight entering through his window. “What are you doing here? Is something the matter?”
“No,” Arthur answers, voice wavering on something that tells Merlin the opposite, “nothing important.”
Merlin frowns. Because yes, it is important if it’s the reason for his weighed down shoulders, the furrow on his forehead, the vulnerability shining through his distant eyes.

Suddenly the doors opened and a haggard-looking Gaius was dragged in next to Merlin and brought to his knees. He was in front of Merlin, though the warlock could still see his face from where he stood.
Gaius started chanting, his eyes glowing, Merlin felt sharp pain from where Gaius’ fingers met his skin; he cried out.
Uther had to put an arm out to keep Arthur in place as light erupted from where they’d been staring. Eyes were averted as the bright beam engulfed Merlin’s frame. When the light faded, Merlin hit the ground with a thud. -
