Summary
When Percival finds Merlin mourning on the shore of Avalon and tells him that Gwaine has been killed, Merlin refuses to accept it as fact. Racing back to Brineved, he finds Gwaine unconscious and hanging onto life by a thread, but this time his magic is actually enough to bring him back from the brink of death. Back in Camelot, Gwaine slowly recuperates while Merlin is forced to confront Gwen as well as his grief for the friend he lost and his feelings for the one he did manage to save.

“Well,” he tries to salvage, eyes widening. “It’d depend on what you asked of me, birdy. But just about, yeah.”
Merlin wriggles his toes under the cushions, deep in thought. Gwaine’s eyes slide shut again as Merlin sighs in supposed contentment. “What if I asked you to take Arthur his dinner?” He asks after a moment.
“Sure, yeah. I’ll do that for you,” Gwaine says amusedly, opening his eyes to rejoin the world. It’s an easy yes, if tedious. Merlin rarely asks for help when he needs it and the knight wasn’t lying when he said ‘anything.’
“Would you help me with the washing up?” Merlin asks, tilting to stare up at him.
Gwaine pretends to think about it for a moment before shrugging. “Eh. Not my favourite chore, but if you truly needed help.”
“What if I asked you to gather herbs with me?” he asks, blue eyes comically wide.
And though Gwaine tosses his head back and laughs, he also places his open hand on his heart and says, “I swear to you, Merly, on my honour. I will protect you from the valley snakes,” just to see the wide grin that breaks out on his friend’s face.

The unutterable sorrow could darken a humble heart, leaving resentment in its wake. He’d seen the unwavering despair and bitter hatred of a grief-stricken man. Arthur had often grown wary of fangs with callous words and sharp remarks. He skilled himself in hiding discolored bruises with the scent of pride, and hesitation with a perfected smile.

Gwaine can’t stay in Camelot a second longer.
As soon as he manages to stand up on his own two feet, he’s gone. He leaves in the dead of night, with nothing but a note as goodbye.
He rides for as long as his body can physically endure before he needs to stop to throw up from the pain, force some water down his throat and keep going. And going. And going. The sun rises and sets and rises again, but Gwaine doesn’t dare stop.
He only has the vaguest idea about where he’s going, something Merlin mentioned once about where he might go if he were to leave Camelot which, of course, at the time they thought would never happen. Something about a lake by the mountains.
Gwaine’s well aware that there’s every chance that even if he finds the lake he’s looking for and even if that was, in fact, the lake Merlin meant, Merlin and Lancelot might still not be there. If they’re smart, they won’t be there. Or anywhere else Gwaine would know to look.
But still, he goes on. If he can’t find his friends, he’ll just return to the life of the wanderer.
The only place he can’t go is back.
