Summary
Hakoda approached Zuko with one goal in mind: extract the truth and set him straight. He certainly got the truth, but shockingly enough the whole truth was more humbling for him than it was for the Fire Prince.

Summary
“I think he’s sick.” Bato says flatly. “So unless you want the next meeting to include the Fire Lord puking all over the budget scrolls, maybe see if he's okay?”
Hakoda glances up the hallway, like perhaps Katara will appear and take over dealing with the prickly teenager. Of course, his daughter is off treating injured refugees with the Avatar, and Bato is still staring at him expectantly, arms crossed.
“Fine,” He sighs, and he claps Bato on the cheek before heading into the room.
Or: Zuko falls ill not long after Ozai's defeat. Hakoda sits with him and learns some unpleasant truths about his childhood.

Unable to turn a blind eye as the young man is followed into a dark street by shady characters, he intervenes and finds himself in a strange situation as well. How is he going to explain this to the fire nation soldiers that accompanied their comrade?

Summary
Hakoda ends up a prisoner of Zhao on his ship mid Book 1 (circa the episode Bato of the Water Tribe) and ends up with an unlikely cellmate, Zuko. Zhao is an absolute vile creep towards Zuko, which sets off all of Hakoda's parental alarm bells. Zhao has his way with Zuko and Hakoda does his best to pick up the pieces.
Its me mashing together tropes I like : Zuko getting more parental figures, Zhao being a vile cockroach of a man, Hakoda in general.
I've seen similar plots with Zhao imprisoning Zuko and Sokka, and I've seen Hakoda and Zuko trapped together, but not the combination.Bookmarked by Little_Miss_Anime_Luva

Holy cannoli I'm loving this so far at chapter 3!!!! I love the painfully awkward convos between hakoda and Zuko, it seems like what would happen in this case.
