The team never thought much about how much younger Pidge was than them. She easily blew them out the water when it came to intelligence and showed plenty of times she can hold her own. Hell lately she was taking more beatings than any of them and that was exactly the problem.
It didn't take much for the team to notice how often the smaller paladin was targeted. it was apparently very obvious to all of their enemies that the team all shared a soft spot for her and naturally tried to protect her. She's been used as a human shield more times than she can count much to her annoyance. Not that it ever ended well for her captor. she was often quick to put them on her ass herself or one of the others would do it for her. The point is besides the stray blast to the arm or getting tossed in a one on one Pidge never took that big of hits. But that was quickly changing.

“...does this weird you out at all?” Lance gestured to his belly. Mouth full of food, Keith swallowed and took a moment to think about what he wanted to say as he sipped his water. He wasn't great with words, but wanted to be honest with his roommate.
“Seahorses.”
“Excuse me?” Lance blinked, confused as to how his predicament was cause for bringing up the marine animal.
“You know how they reproduce, yeah?”
“Of course, everyone does. That still doesn-” That's when it clicked, but Keith explained anyway.
“The males are the ones that have the babies. But that doesn't make them female, or even less male in general.” He went to take another huge bite of his food, but not before Lance caught the small, genuine smile on Keith's face. The Cuban smiled back, though a bit wider, as he realized he would be okay with Keith.

Perhaps, when Keith first found out he would be taking Shiro's place as the pilot of the Kerberos Mission, he should have known something would go wrong. They always did when good things happened.
Perhaps, when the people closest to Katie were the farthest from her they'd ever been, she should have guessed it wasn't quite as perfect as it seemed. She'd become quite adept at detecting flaws, anomalies, and all manner of bugs.
When Shiro broke the good news to Keith, it seemed as if things were finally looking up for the kid. And for a while, that was true. But he couldn't have known what would happen on that ill-fated mission. He couldn't have prepared the mission crew for it, or made some far-fetched attempt to shield them from it. The reality of it will haunt him, regardless.
Post-Landing explosion. Yeah right.

Summary
Life was just an equation, an existence full of formulas. All James needed to do was put the right pieces together and everything would work as planned. Yeah, those pieces might not fit together easily, or even at all, but at the end of the day it was just what he had to do. After all, it wasn’t as if society was about to make exceptions for him specifically. Especially when that ill-fitting cog in the machine happened to be himself.
So, of course Keith had to throw a wrench in the machine. It wasn’t easy playing a part he was never going to fit into, molding himself into the picture perfect son and student, but it was an unspoken agreement they all unwillingly signed when coming into the world, right? The one that required them to fit in at all costs, even at the sake of their individuality?
But that meant nothing to Keith. He was able to pretend he wasn't the opposite of what the world wanted him to be, as if he was okay carving out his own personal path that no one else would use. Loneliness didn't perturb him, no. Though, it wasn't as if Keith cared for rules in the first place. Breaking some more was nothing new.
This strange pull to keep being around Keith though? That was new.
