Summary
It’s the year 1990. Hawkins Fuller works as a manager at his wife Lucy’s diner in rural Arkansas. Tim Laughlin, a young Irishman, has settled in town after a short-lived career as a classical singer. He looks after his sick mother and suffers under his father’s oppressive regime at home. Hawkins wants to have sex with Tim, so they both leave to spend a long weekend in a remote cabin. Tragedy strikes on the way. Hawkins fires a pistol to save Tim from being raped. He decides not to turn himself in and to flee to Mexico.
Inspector Marcus Gaines is put on the homicide case. This man seems to know Hawkins Fuller, and he even understands to a deeper extent why Hawkins wants to avoid being caught.

Unable to keep it a secret anymore, not when it had been so close to Nick and Charlie becoming just Nick. “And I know I’ve waited too long to say it and I've ruined everything. I don’t expect anything from you, I just - I need you to know. My life has been so much better since you’ve been in it. You’re my favourite person, Charlie.”
“How - how long?” Charlie choked out. He was looking at Nick like he had two heads. “Nick, please. How long?”
