Laurent simply couldn’t hide his growing delight. Damen had snowflakes in his curls, their whiteness a stark contrast against the darkness of his soft hair. Laurent didn’t think Damen could look more handsome but there he was, strong and broad and his.
“Some say you spoil me,” Laurent said and allowed his lips to curl into a smile.
“Some should mind their own business,” Damen replied and skimmed his knuckles over Laurent’s cheek. “You’re mine to spoil.”
Laurent was suddenly very grateful that the air was so cruelly cold against his skin, allowing him to claim that the pink flush on his cheeks was a mere consequence of being outside and not an ill-concealed reaction to Damen’s easy admission.
“As you are mine,” Laurent said at last, his voice quiet but certain.
Damen takes Laurent to Acquitart in winter to steal some time away from their court.

Enguerran turned. “Vere is welcoming its brother.” His voice was careful, balanced on the edge between sarcasm and diplomacy. Even as the words left his mouth, he could feel the shift in the air. Damen inhaled deeply, his chest rising beneath the weight of cold air and restrained fury. His voice was ice wrapped around iron. “The King of Vere,” he said. “Where is our brother?” Enguerran was pale — he’d always been pale, his skin like milk even in summer, when others browned and glowed. He just turned red. Burned. Now, under Damen’s gaze, he felt like he was burning again. “The rumors-” but his voice cracked like thin ice.
“The rumors,” Damen interrupted, “have it that the King is missing.” Enguerran flinched, then nodded. The words tasted like ash, “Aye. The King is missing.” The admission fell like a stone in the silence that followed. Enguerran braced for it — the strike that had to follow.
Damen didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t lift a hand. He only took a single step forward. It was enough. Enguerran stumbled back without thinking. His heart beat like a war drum in his chest, his breath shallow in the freezing air. Damen loomed before him — soaked, furious, silent.And this was only the beginning.

Damen’s fingers stilled in the laces. He looked up to catch Laurent’s reflection in the mirror but Laurent’s eyes were stubbornly fixed to his own forearms. Laurent’s voice was clipped, something that Damen was slowly growing unused to.The day of Laurent's coronation was meant to be joyous. When he knelt as a Prince and rose as a King, something changed inside him. Damen just wanted to be let in to find out what happened.
