When she shuts her eyes, Miranda hears the terrible click of a gun misfiring and James’ wretched cry; smells the acrid gunpowder; feels the weight of the small paring knife leave her hand to embed itself in Peter Ashe’s eye. Then there is the awful aftermath. James’ equally surprised and horrified expression as he stares at her face, splattered with foreign blood— his slowly spreading manic grin and choked laugh upon realizing that she’s uninjured. The subsequent mad dash from the manor. If the last vestiges of Miranda’s old life were embers, they’d been used up after that.
Miranda survives the Charles Town confrontation with her belief in the possibility of reconciliation with Civilization shattered. The Walrus crew are still becalmed. The Maroons still agree to an alliance. The future impact of her presence and new outlook, however, remains to be seen.

Jack takes Izzy’s hand, giving it a squeeze as they walk up the path to the front door of the Barlow’s house. The cobblestones are lit by small solar lanterns, each containing a miniature flame that makes the cold evening seem just a little bit warmer. The building itself is as close to a New England-style mansion as you can get without being gaudy, and the fresh layer of snow on the roof makes it look like something out of a Hallmark movie. The glow of the lights strung across the front porch and along the widow’s walk twinkle merrily as they reach the door.
Izzy glares at the house. Of course, the Barlow’s home is beautiful and elegant. He wants to get mad about it, but he's suddenly curious about what kind of art they have. He expects it will be tasteful and expensive and utterly, devastatingly gorgeous. Probably with a lot of nudity.

Summary
This is how he does it, Charles realises abruptly. Flint finds the thing that other men crave most and then he tells them they can have it. Tells them how to have it, laying out a path to their desires that passes squarely through his hands. Flint might be a liar, but Charles no longer sees him as some grasping grifter pulling off a scam. Flint is bigger than that, and far more dangerous. He’s a self-proclaimed prophet, foretelling doom and judgement, promising salvation and redemption to anyone who follows him. And the worst part, the best part, the part that holds the power, is that Flint himself actually believes he can deliver it.
What really frightens Charles is that for once in his life, he doesn’t want to prove Flint wrong.
A.K.A. Everyone talks about how Silver helped create the myth of Flint in the aftermath of Charlestown. And maybe he did - but Charles Vane got there first.
