As he is in the midst of writing a farewell note to the one person he truly loved, his roomate Melchior interrupts him and convinces him that the world can be kind if he gives it a chance. The two confess their deepest feelings towards each other, and Melchior comforts Moritz, ensuring that Moritz knows that he is deeply cared for.

Geliebter – einzig und allein dieses Wort – als Substantiv, nicht als Adjektiv – hatte Moritz verwendet. Nicht geliebter Melchior, nicht geliebter Freund, sondern einzig Geliebter, mit einer Finalität, die Melchior erschaudern ließ. Nicht nur, weil es ohne Zweifel ein Abschied gewesen war, sondern weil er diesem Wort so viel Bedeutung zugemessen hat, dass Melchior es kaum verstehen kann.
