It starts with Dean insisting it’s just a scratch—and ends with Sam sitting by his bedside in a rain-soaked motel room, spooning ramen soup out of a coffee pot and pretending not to worry. Fever makes Dean stubborn, causing him to issue half-formed orders about cleaning guns and salting doors, and to reach back into old memories, calling out in a voice that hurts more than the wound.
So Sam does what Dean’s always done for him: he stays. He cools the fever, wraps him in blankets, humors the nonsense, and keeps the world small and safe until morning.

The blacksmith boy had been relieved to be rid of him, annoyed that he hadn't listened to him about the boar, amused that Hans had been such an asshole about the horse and then been dragged off of his own, and content in the knowledge that he hadn't accidentally gotten Hans killed. He'd curled up in bed that day, frightening the maid they sent in to clean as she was sure his health had suddenly plummeted as he stared, red eyed, at the wall and refused to move or eat.

“You’re making that up,” Castiel said, narrowing his eyes while trying to find any hint in Dean’s face that he was trying to make Castiel do something that he would be able to tease him about relentlessly afterwards. Sam and Claire were going to have a field day out of this; he just knew it.
“Uh, no. I’m not, actually,” Dean said, face completely deadpan. “Go on, just… drop yourself…?”
