Sebastian pushed through, heart hammering, and reached the side doors just in time to see the masked blond and the young woman sprinting down the grand staircase. By the time he reached the bottom, they had vanished into the darkness beyond the castle gates.
Then something caught his eye.
On the stairs, half-hidden in a pool of flickering candlelight, lay the stranger’s cane. Sebastian bent to pick it up, turning it over in his hand. His pulse quickened.
“Oh, mystery man,” he murmured, running a thumb along the cool silver, tracing its curves with care. “You won’t escape me so easily.”
And with the cane clutched tight in his hand, Sebastian vowed he would find him.

"Not the Viscount," she whispered, quiet enough that even the closest person couldn't overhear.
"What?"
"I said I'm not the bloody Viscount," she snapped. "The situation has...changed."
He remembered being told not to ask for details until she was bleeding less, so he took her hand. "You're here now. Nothing can touch you while you're in my city," he said firmly, more sure of that than he'd been of anything in his life.
She gave him a look that was part helpless fondness and part pity. The blood on her mouth gave her a grotesque look that made his stomach lurch. "You really believe that, don't you?"

The man scoffed heading back to the door. “Save your prayers for someone who’s listening.”
Sebastian wondered if he would be saying prayers over a pyre sometime soon with his attitude. Narrowing his eyes at the thought, he wondered instead if maybe Hawke had extra time on his hands. A few less cutthroats would do Kirkwall some good.
