Maybe he got cursed by God, a punishment for something he didn’t know he had done. He shook all thoughts from his head and started walking again.
What he didn’t know was that in a small town in Iran, four people woke up startled. Four people had just dreamt of a young man being beaten bloody, left in an alleyway to bleed out, only for him to wake up an hour later. They watched as he started walking with no path. “You fucking idiot,” Yusuf sobbed, “You are’t allowed to leave me that simply, you hear me, you aren’t getting away from me, you and I go together,”
Nicolò coughed, groaning as his wounds stitched themselves back together, Yusuf could feel the other man’s pulse race back to life as the blood flowed through his veins again. He should let go, give Nicolò some space, but all he could do was hold the man tighter, in a bone crushing hug.
“Yusuf,” Nicolò let out weakly, “Please, give me a chance to breathe,” he patted his friend on the arm.
“Sorry, sorry,” Yusuf repeated, pulling away from the hug, missing the feeling of Nicolò close to him. He sniffed, letting Nicolò take his time, “Why am I apologising?” he said at loud, instead of thinking it, “You are a fucking idiot, Nicolò, why did you do that, why did you take the dagger to you heart, instead of me? Do you think I enjoy watching you die?”

“Today I met a boy who escaped al-Quds,” Yusuf says, and Nicolò stares back at him this time. His clean face is solemn, his pale eyes almost sad, and Yusuf wishes he could see some anger in them. Anything but this. “They killed his whole family.”
“When you say them,” Nicolò blinks, and there is a twitch in his strong jaw. “You mean me. My people.”
Yusuf feels he has been running his whole life.
He ran from his duties as the family’s heir when he refused to marry the woman chosen by his parents. Yusuf eventually made a new home in Jerusalem, and he thought he was done running. Then the Franks laid their siege and Yusuf was killed and brought back to life too many times. Before he realised, he was on the run again. Only this time, he is not alone.
Or; a road trip around the Mediterranean in which Yusuf struggles with his new life, searches for the women in his dreams and learns how to open his heart. Also, there is only one bed.
