Dumbledore didn't make it to the trial and Harry was expelled. Feeling guilty, he offered Harry the position of Groundskeeper since Hagrid is technically a professor now so the position needs to be filled. Harry turns down Sirius' offer to stay at the gloomy house just so he can go back to Hogwarts in any capacity he is allowed. Age is not a problem since Hagrid had only been 14 when he started, but Harry is a lot smaller and more vulnerable than Hagrid was even if he is a year older than Hagrid had been at the start.
Snape thinks Harry is at a very good age to learn to love cock and decides to take advantage of the situation while Hagrid is out of the country. Then, things get even more interesting when Hagrid returns...
