I supposed I had sewn it into my mind since I was young, lacing alcoholism into poetry while watching my father drink himself into an embarrassment of a corpse, and I don’t know how to unravel the knots. I’ve become practiced in day to day passivity, but it isn’t misery.
I’ve known what it is to want to die; surviving off scamming at bars and sleazy strip joints, spending weekends falsifying ice cream sales to cover up the drugs.
I aim for knowing what it is to live, but hope tastes a lot like resentment on my poisoned tongue.
I think he knew that when he met me.
