Peter Pettigrew was not the Secret Keeper. He couldn’t have been. He was already gone when the Fidelius charm was cast, already lost. There was only really one person left.
Sirius knows this. He makes a choice.
(Or: Sirius thinks Remus was the secret-keeper. Remus thinks it was Sirius. Sirius escapes to protect Harry when he hears Remus is coming to teach DADA at Hogwarts. Cue angst.)

When Peter Pettigrew told Voldemort the location of the Potters, the Fidelius Charm was not destroyed. Sirius was so consumed by thoughts of revenge against Wormtail that when he saw the destruction of the Potter family's cottage, he went after him immediately. As a result, Sirius wasn't there to give Harry to Hagrid and as Hagrid wasn't let in on the secret, he couldn't see the cottage and couldn't get Harry out. After framing Sirius, Peter decided to go into hiding at Potter Cottage and took the secret away from Remus just in case he decided to go there.
