Summary
Life wasn’t as he expected it would be. He trudges through dust and debris instead of clean roads and grassy parks. What used to be a simple 9-5 job was now a necessity for survival.
There were no more cars or bikes, only military tanks and shitty food carts. The sun doesn’t set like it used to - what was once a beautiful view had simply been reduced to nothingness, a dull sight in this now broken world. It fit a broken man like him after all.
That’s what he was. Broken. Vile. Horrible. Barely even alive. What is being alive anymore? There’s no purpose to it but simple survival. A cruel joke this sadistic world has played on him because he was just that damn unlucky.
If it were up to him, he’d be dead a long time ago. Buried right next to her, only she wasn’t buried, was she? She was left bleeding out on that damned field because they had to run. Because that’s what life did, it takes, and it took a little girl that night - that awful night - was that really life?
He should’ve died then.
But he didn’t.

His skin pulls tight, and a vague ripple wanders down his spine, an urge to shift and protect searing as he stuffs it down and reaches in with two blood-slicked palms.
Dry patches of soft down catches and sticks to his hands, but more hot crimson also coats them as he gently lifts the pup out from beneath entrails.
A girl, judging by her scent.
Earthy, green - maybe a little spiced.
It’s hard to tell with so much of her blood intermingled with what he thinks must be her mama's and her other fallen packmate.
Distantly, he feels Tess come to hover behind him, her hand now braced firmly on the same shoulder she’d been tender with only minutes ago. “Is it still alive?” Her voice shakes and her scent shifts, turning startled and unsure.
The low whine and broken whimper that whistles out of the pup as he clears the protective curve of the two dead wolves says yes.
The pained twist and wiggle as she pants says that she may not be for long.
Christ almighty she’s little.
Ain’t supposed to shift this young, shouldn't be able to.

Summary
“Tommy would let me have it,” she says, the sentence a taunt if he’s ever heard one. She might not be wrong, really. He can absolutely see his younger brother finding his child playing rabbit thief funny enough to let her get away with it, even if he would make amends later by replacing it. That was always Tommy’s way, after all, causing a ruckus and then doing his best to make up for it later.
Joel wonders how his little brother will make up for leaving him responsible for his child, and the thought frays his patience, already worn thin by being stuck on the road to wander at random.
“It’s not yours,” he tells her, grabbing the rabbit by its ears and yanking it out of her grip. It’s harsher than it should be, he knows, but this entire situation is poking around something that’s settled in more and more the closer they’ve gotten to where Tommy was last seen.
We don’t get to keep what isn’t ours.

His hands shake and his voice is lined with thinly veiled rage, but there's still a wobble when he thinks about her funeral and that too-small coffin she'd been in.
His head still aches from the bullet he'd tried to put through it that very same day.
Another thing Tommy had missed; only finding him almost two days later, unresponsive and crusted in dried blood.

The moment her head settled into his hand, she leaned into his touch, her body instinctively seeking the warmth. Joel froze. His breath caught in his throat. The realization of what he was doing hit him hard.
‘What the hell are you doing?’ his mind whispered.
He pulled his hand back quickly, almost flinching at the tenderness that had overtaken him.He hadn’t let himself care in years. Caring meant hurting. Caring meant losing. And Joel had already lost everything.
Ellie shifted in her sleep, mumbling something incoherent, and Joel found himself glancing at her again. He clenched his teeth, trying to ignore the warmth that still lingered on his hand where her head had rested.
