Their duties as guiding stars continues into Teyvat, to watch the world pass through time, and pluck the threads of fate to reweave as they deem fit for the people inhabiting it. To end the cycle or to redo it once more? It is colder the further one strays from the sun.
In other words… Both Traveler twins have been awake since they arrived. After leaving to observe the rise and eventual fall of Khaenri’ah, Lumine disappears with the civilization as they stray from the divine. Aether continues their preordained calling, to watch gods tear each other apart and clean up the messes left behind that may alter fate far too irreparably to leave unchecked – all the while searching for his lost kin within their ruins.
Within one of those messes, before Morax has the chance to make contact with the remnants of the god he defeated, Aether chances upon the child of the stars Alatus Nemeseos.

There was something incongruous about the Traveler, something the Wanderer couldn’t place. He’d noticed it for the first time back in the Delusion factory, when the Traveler wore a mask of righteousness.
Initially, he’d chalked it up to the Traveler coming from worlds away, the way he seemed to stand apart from the workings of the rest of Teyvat. He’d presumed it ran along the same vein that his Visionless abilities came from, a strange resonance unique to only him.

In the aftermath of Sora, The Balladeer's introductory festival, Snezhnaya finds itself in a state of disarray.
