For all of Charles’ life, his soulmate mark was a grey ‘hope’, written in an elegant, slanted cursive. Grey means you haven’t met yet, the vague word unchangeable, unlike the soul marks of those who have met, an inky black mark that changes with each thought your soulmate thinks about you. His mother adores his soul mark, and tells him often that his soulmate must be very refined, to write so prettily, and she must love him very much, so think of him as ‘hope’.
When he dies, he thinks of his soulmate, who he’s never met, and he wonders if she knows. If the hue of grey has shifted slightly, or there’s something more innate, something viscerally within her that tells her he’s gone. Or maybe there is nothing at all. Maybe she will live her entire life waiting to meet him and will die disappointed.
But one day he is sitting on a rooftop, wishing he could feel the late summer warmth surely still lingering in the air, when he happens to glance down and that elegant, slanted cursive ‘hope’ is now a deep black ‘idiot’.
